Maf sensor cleaning

Sensed a slight flat spot in lower rev range and after further checks by the tuner advised there was a boost leak and upon mentioning I had replaced original filter with aftermarket oil one he advised to clean Maf sensor and replace filter with original as car is very sensitive

Is it the silver bits I need to clean with Maf cleaner?

Thanks

I used CRC Mass air flow sensor cleaner and spray the entire sensor, wait a few minutes and reinstalled it back on.

Thanks got the crc spray ..
Did you spray it several times and leave it to dry?

Do oil filters actually affect the performance to such a degree?

Your simply trying to clean off any oils or residue that maybe on the wire element/mesh measure the air volume coming into to intake. This will tell the computer how to adjust the fuel:air ratio.

Thanks..whilst testing /logging a boost leak was detected and assumed it would be either from the manifold or exhaust end but surprised it was due to oil filters messing up Maf sensors..would they cause such a boost leak?

Tuner kept insisting on replacement of Maf sensors and insisted cleaning won't make any difference ..I'm hoping issue gets rectified otherwise over £500 for a replacement set

Spray into the holes/ports. CRC or isopropanol alcholol is good for this.

If the MAF is reading wrong it may show as low on boost ie similar to a leak so it my be your issue.

Nothing much to be gained by aftermarket air filters other than sound.

Thanks..cleaned..well sprayed Maf sensors and just waiting for some Orem filters to arrive before all bits go back together..

Can I expect some initial error codes to pop up for Maf sensors as they were removed?

Suppose worse case scenario if they are completely messed up ..can they be replaced under warranty?

Thanks ..

Cleaned out Maf sensors put back with new oem filters and initially on startup revs are playing musical tunes..

Haven't really had chance to drive car very much but presume it will settle down..

Is it normal for any adjustments to take place after car has been driven several hundred miles?

maf sensors

Don't want to sound any bells, or anything like that, but...

Some MAF sensors are extremely sensitive to any outside interference ( cleaners chemicals ).... Don't know exactly how the BMW one works therefore I will shut my mouuuts .
I have bad experience with my previous cars, and that got expensive. I will never touch MAF sensors with any cleaners, chemicals, compressed air or such.
My extend of cleaning is just wipe with a rag of a sort ( that is it )
If BMW is using Karman vortex principle ( or such ) + temp sensor ( MAF ) you may not be to happy with the outcome, since the flow meter is measuring frequency of the air moving though it ( the device ) and ( Karman ) has a thin aluminum foil that resonates with air flowing through it, electronics then translate it into voltage that computer can actually use to calculate proper fuel.
Using anything to clean it ( compressed air, wet spray, alcohol will damage the sensing abilities of the MAF and will kill the sensor ( wrong read outs ). Rough idle, inability to rev....

Hopefully BMW ( bosch, continental ) is using cleaning friendly device which is unaffected by any of the cleaners.

Yes idle is very very rough..

Think it's best to get some new ones...

Just waiting for Eurocarparts to have their usual 30% sale

http://www.eurocarparts.com/ecp/c/BM...8c8774d&000009

Presume above are the correct ones as after 30% discount they will be about £105 each

Does anyone know or had previous experience of replacing Maf sensors.. As do you notice the difference immediately on replacing them or does car have to be driven several hundred miles for any adjustments to take place..

Any advice appreciated as thinking maybe I'm being too impatient and haven't given car enough time to settle in after cleaning Maf sensors ...presuming it needs time..

maf sensors

Unless there are codes in the computer that need to be cleared, I don't see a reason for the new pieces needing to be reset (initiated, coded ).
Which means the car should run (idle) perfect right away.

That is my understanding, although I've been proven wrong countless times before (especially by my wife )

Thanks

Ordered new ones from Eurocarparts

Hoping they will make a difference..

Current ones probably are ok..probably me just being paranoid as revs not very stable initially ..

Any ways have 14 days to return hence if no difference noted ..they will be going back..

Went overseas for 2 weeks come back, car is idling very funky. Looks like my girl has been driving it (she’s usually scared to) and had a CEL pulling up code P00BD.

Before the CEL, the car actually stalled on me while pulling out of my drive way, removed my tune and it was fine for a bit.

Anyways I simply cleaned the MAF sensors, and all set! I even called BMW and set an appointment... thank goodness I can cancel. They have the worst receptionists there I’ve ever seen. BMW customer service in Germany is ON POINT, the best people to work with. Here in the States, my local dealer at least they are crap.

Anywyas thank you for this info!
