The side view camera has its own button on the right side of the knob.

Does not come on automatically. Need to push the button mentioned above. You can toggle between back and all through the idrive

Does anyone use the side view? I found it rather useless, I wonder if it is part of the tools to make automatic parking

Yes, that is true When you put your car in reverse, it will automatically turn on. When your stationary, or drive slowly forward, you have to manually push your camera button to on.

Side-view camera is never automatic. Only rear-view and surround-view come on automatically when you put your car in R.

Side-view camera is very useful in very rare situations. That's the best way I can describe it. You can also use it for things like parking precisely without hitting an object in front of you.

I don't understand why there's still no front camera for this car. They could've included a frontal view together with night-vision.

I like it. I use it in 2 situations:
1) Entering a T-junction with poor visibility
2) Parking - tells me where the front of the car is so I don't touch the curb.

Yes, that is right, but I responded to his question the way he wrote it. I should have said, when wanting side view, push the button nd when backing up is is an automatic feature.

Btw now I have a question. I just picked mine up last night and for some reason, my top view only works when I push the proximity button to get up close when parking in the garage. It should work when I push the camera button. Any ideas on that would be helpful also.

Congrats you can swap between rear-view and surround-view camera by pushing (down) the iDrive button.

Thanks for that info, but it was the top down view info I needed it you had any ideas on that one. On one m5 all I had to do was push the camera button and it would toggle between top view and side view. How is yours working.

What you call "top down" is called Surround-view. It works the same on all M5's, just go and try it on your car you'll understand.

I'm disappointed with the amount of time it takes to activate the side cameras. By the time they are up and running the opportunity to use them has passed. Should be instant on.

i think it would be useful if it came on automaticly. but i find when i pull up to an intersection to turn left or right, the last thing i want to be doing is taking my eyes off the road to have to look down, locate that button( i always get confused at the time between the parking button, and the side view, and which one i need to press) i just find it very awkward to use.

they should have had that button isolated off on its own. maybe on the steering wheel back somewhere, and the display for it should have been in the instrument cluster, more in your line of sight.
