For clarity, I wasn't suggesting anything about the extent of a master technician's knowledge, more that I believe they will be constrained to provide a response which limits liability.

I did ask about hard break-in and was told not to do it & to follow the procedure specified within the handbook. For previous BMWs, asked about replacing RFT with non-RFT and just got told that other customers had done it, but it's not something that a BMW dealer can recommend.

I can only speak as found, my "Master Tech" lent me the hoist and tools to make wiring them open easier,

With respect to changing run-flats (Not fitted to M cars anyway) to none run-flats, I would check with the insurance company first, because in the event of any accident, tyres are checked depending on what happened, BMW do not recommend as you rightly say.

I never did it, just changed to OEM spec RFTs; considering how I like to corner, it didn't make sense to change to a tyre with a softer sidewall!

And high five to your master tech!

It's baffling why BMW would use valves to limit the beautiful exhaust note of the car but add fake sound through the speakers into the cabin. Goofy ass Germans. Don't even get me started on the climate control....

my M5 is non comp, so that may be the distinquishing factor. if you have a cp than the original stock may be different to start with. I can tell you as others with the non cp, wiring open the valve flaps is easy and makes a significant difference in sound tone. and its only

Hey Guys did this today and let me start off by saying I was extremely skeptical that this would even create a 10% difference in sound...well long story short boy was I wrong. I went to home depot got 16 Guage metal wire, jacked the car up, and was done in less then 5 minutes. I started the car and ..it makes a HUGE difference in sound. I took a before and after video and will post it on here as soon as im done editing it.

I discussed with my SA and he told me to use a good wire and remove the vacuum lines. I was told that there are no warranty issues with exhaust mods unless I change the downpipes.

..so I ordered the exhaustmeister..installed in 10 minutes and bang..a louder exhaust under 3k rpm without drone!

The reason I did not wire the flaps is to avoid some unwanted attention in office parking during startup :/

Wired mine open over the weekend. Didn't jack the car up so it was a bit difficult to get underneath and reach control arm but certainly do-able. Shoved the rubber handle of a hammer into the exhaust to hold flap open while I wired it which seem to work quite well. Unfortunately, weather and road construction by house doesn't permit me to drive the car. Ugh!

Have any of you taken your cars in for service with the valves tied? And if so did they say anything? I have a service appointment next week related to brakes and wondering if I should cut off the zip ties to play it safe. Kind of pain putting them back on though...

Wired mine open on the weekend. What a difference. The tone is much better.

Took the car in for new rear pads, picked it up this morning. My SA asked if I had put a new exhaust on. Told him I simply wired open the flaps and he was very impressed. No issue whatsoever.

Some people say the exhaust valves play a role in performance by increasing back-pressure, which in turn increases torque at lower revs.

I've also heard ppl complaining of the car feeling more sluggish after installing aftermarket exhausts (which don't have valves of course)

So I'm wondering if there is any truth to this theory?

On any turbo car, any back pressure results in degradation of performance. In a perfect world, we wouldn't have exhausts, but rather dump it all at the exit of the turbo. THIS maximizes torque due to instantaneous turbo spool up. The more your turbo is able to dump crap the better the power/torque.

Interesting thread.

I actually have the Akrapovic setup, and tempted to do this mod as well.

OK, finished the mod.

Its louder on idle now, and the lower revs which is great. A bit of a pain for the Akra, but it was easiest when the tips were off. This for me was about a 15 minute job, I have no idea how you guys did it in 5.
