Penalties for speeding in your M5

What are the consequences of speeding in your country ?

Here in the UK, we get points on our license and a fine. If one is caught doing say 10-20mph over the limit, the standard is 3-6 points and say £100-£200 fine.

However if caught doing 25mph over the limit, one could get summoned to court, get their license taken away for a year, or even face jail time (if deemed dangerous driving)

Also if you were to accumulate 12 points on your license, it will be taken away for a year.

Pretty much the same thing here. 12 points and you lose your license for 6-12 months.

Speeding 1 - 10 MPH over speed limit 3
Speeding 11 - 20 MPH over speed limit 4
Speeding 21 - 30 MPH over speed limit 6
Speeding 31 - 40 MPH over speed limit 8
Speeding 40+ MPH over speed limit 11
Reckless driving 5

In Canada, province of Ontario - 50km +

demerit 6 points + immediate 7 day licence suspension + car impoundment for 7 days+ up to 2 year additional licence suspension upon conviction.

(if driver accumulated 9 points, then formal face to face interview with the Ministry of Transportation licensing office to explain to them why you should not be suspended)

Fine can be from $2,000 and up to $10,000 (discretionary adjustment can be made by the prosecutor and with judge's approval) + car impound fees & storage + towing. Insurance company can drop your coverage on next renewal and you can be classified as high risk driver in which you can only be coverage by secondary insurance market that cover this kind of driver profile. Typically, if you can get this kind of high risk insurance coverage, expect to pay about $15 - 20,000 Cdn a year.

Daym that's harsh.
Someone told me that only fines are given out in the US, which did sound appealing.
The threat of losing a license sucks.
I know speeding is bad generally. When you have a three lane high way to yourself, doing 100mph in an m5 really isn't dangerous compared to some other vehicles you see on the road doing the legal limit in traffic.

Owned the F10 M5 now for 2 and a half years and no speeding tickets. You just have to have the right tools and drive smartly.

The only thing that worries me is intent on radar and a well hidden trooper. But very few troopers in the U.S. employ such advanced tactics. Texas is one of them though. Dont mess with Texas. Lol!

I think Norway has the stiffest fine. It is based on the driver's previous year's income (I guess they can referenced to income tax filed)

Pick and choose your battles. But it always depends on the officer, what your doing at the time and your attitude.

Virginia police have no problem sending people to jail for reckless driving.

What about foreign tourists? My dad was the one driving on our trip in America (May-June 2010)

100 mph/160 kph from Southern California to Nevada.

I think Eastern Europeans and Russians have most freedom on the road then.

My uncles had the E28 m5 and m535i back in the 1980s. They always tell me how driving back then was so much more fun - less traffic, no speed cameras or speed guns.
They used to race all the time.

Poland seems to have a relatively high speed limit from what I heard.

Not uncommon to see 200+ kmh driving on the D8 and roadways to and from Wroclaw

My brother went on a road trip through California, Nevada and Arizona. They hired a Ford Mustang.
He got caught doing 95mph lol, cops took his details. After arriving back in the UK he received a letter in the post from the county judge requesting he pay a fine of £350 or face arrest next time he visits USA. So he paid, well got my mom to pay !

There is a speed limit of 140 km/h which translates to about 90mph, but most of the cars will push 180 ( 120 mph ) to 200 ( 140 mph ) without hesitation .

I have done it myself exactly there Wroclaw to Dresden, there was no one to obstruct my drive, you could really go as fast as you please, roads are nicely lit up, straight and smooooth as nothing I have expected.
It was the best drive I have had so far, German roads are nice but, there are cameras, polizei here and there, easier to get cought having fun.

My uncle from Switzerland got a fine for doing 1km/h over the limit, I thought that this was harshest I have heard ever, somehow the clean and beautiful country that it is , does not make me want to see that sort of swiss precision.

Russia on the other hand is a place where it seems to me that freedoms are taken to extreme, and that is not my cup of tea, never been there ( not planning ). It is probably a nice place to visit, but....

Think you meant instant on. I am seeing more laser being used by DPS now than Instant On. I don't think Instant On works because it still gives reflections that you pick up down the road if you have a good system.

No points system that I am aware of in Texas. Course I haven't gotten any speeding tickets either since I pick my places to go fast and when I am highway driving I am very aware of what's going on around me.

In Switzerland, if you don't do something stupid, fines go from usd 100 to around 700.

If you speed at crazy levels,

- Fine is proportional to wealth, and can reach few hundred thousends. The priniciple is very basic...
- Car can be confiscated and destroyed.
- Your driving license is removed up to a year.
- etc etc

So guys, never do something crazy in Switzerland, and remember the Autobhan is just crossing the border.

Speed limit 120km/h here

No points, just bribes and fines.
Physical stop usually turns into a request for a bribe.
30% over the speed limit can see you in court. 50%+ can see you in jail. So you see why many just pay the bribes

For 20+ mph... Money for a good lawyer and a slap on the wrist.

Any speed under 20mph you can usually get taken care of and dismissed easily with a small court cost and defensive driving class ( less then $100).

It's been a many many years since I have been pulled over and ticketed though.

Great stuff from Poland so far. In fact, Poland (along with Romania) have the fastest-growing road networks in the E.U.

I always had a feeling that Switzerland is the most anti-car nation in Europe.......but my goodness that is just extreme.

And over 1 km/h.......shouldn't there be some sort of allowance and tolerance to compensate for SPEEDOMETER VARIATION?
