Remember that when the A/C button is "on" (green light is lit) it doesn't mean that the A/C is running. It only means that if the climate control system determines that cooling is necessary, the A/C compressor will automatically be switched on. When the A/C button is "off", it's really in economy mode and the A/C compressor will not be switched on regardless of temp.

It's most likely running at start up for the same reason the mirrors automatically go to defrost. Depending on the ambient temp, the car will always try to clear your views of the road. A/C helps to defog the window in high humidity situations wether or not it's hot or cold. I wouldn't code out anything unless a Tech tells you that something is wrong. I think the engineers thought we had enough buttons to push to start driving the car down the road. Maybe they tried to take out a few steps to help simplify the process. Just my opinion.

It's a convenience feature. Instead of lowering your front window & opening your sunroof, BMW engineers figure A/C would be faster to cool down the interior.

that's not convenient though. i have it on sometimes in afternoon because it's hot, and in morning, it's cold. where i live, i rarely use climate control at all because it's pretty much perfect everyday.
