DCT Flutter
On my '14 M5 CP I notice when I put the car in reverse I get a big of a flutter coming from the trans shortly after I give it gas and it begins to move. I brought it up to the dealer, they said it was normal, but for giggles reset the adaption.
Anyone else notice this? Is this normal? |

This is not normal. This is a sign of your clutches slipping. I had this on my M5 and when I did the transmission re-build we inspected my clutches and most of them were going bad with metal shavings in my transmission oil.
I would at the very least ask an Indy Shop to take an oil sample from the DCT for you and have them send it off to Blackstone for analysis.

I have this same issue. brought it up to the dealership and one of their Master Techs said it was normal and just something the DCT does. He recommended easing into the gas when in reverse. I will bring this up to the Indy shop I will have do an inspection before my original 50k mile warranty is up and the CPO kicks in.

Since the average bimmerpost member and M5/M6 owner only leases their car, it won't be a problem for anyone before the lease is up. But for long term owners, I am telling you this is a problem. No BMW tech would ever do a re-build on a transmission, instead if you are lucky enough to get the Service Adviser to defend a claim that your DCT is going bad, the tech will only replace the entire transmission, they are not going to take the time to open it up and inspect the clutches and perform an analysis on the oil. Hence, the reason why techs at dealerships say "oh that's normal," but they have no clue.
Let me put it more plainly, my DCT would also flutter when I put it into reverse and engaged the accelerator. When I first bought the M5 brand new, the DCT did not do this, and then when I re-built the transmission, the DCT did not do this anymore. I don't know how much more clear I can be on this topic.

Most of the time, it's out of the SA's hands if the part in question is not actually broken at the time you bring it to them. I even remember one time a friend of mine brought his E60 M5 in to the dealer with proof that his rod bearings were going bad. The dealer refused to do anything until the engine actually failed. It's a sad world we live in.

What's a flutter feel like? I am going to be test driving some used M5's soon, and want to know more. Is it like the jerking feeling that happens in manual cars? I remember sometimes, due to the immediate response, the power would actually shift my whole body, and my right leg being stationary and planted, would press the accelerator further in, and result in a more intense jerk -- to which my body would further respond to...and repeat cycle a couple of times until you get sick from all the back and forth, and realize you just need to bend your knee more to stop jerking. **sorry, for all the jerks I just don't know how to explain it better** -- Maybe Newton's 3rd Law?
Flutter -- I think -- is just the gear slipping? or not engaging? |

I've got 58k on the odometer, and mine does this in reverse as well. Just take the roadside assistance on your insurance policy and start saving for some new clutches!

I don't think the reverse issue is a issue lol. I changed them for the upgrade for more power. When I replaced them there was signs of it slipping on the steel plates. It's really not that big of a job no special tools needed. I changed the clutch discs without removing the whole clutch pack.

My car does the same. Sometimes in drive too. I asked about the "hesitation" and the foreman said the same thing. This is normal. I am under 37,000 miles. But I am going to take it in again.

I'm bringing my car in again for this. Any key points I should call out to make sure they don't just say it's normal and act like they are doing me a favor by running a calibration?
