Did this guy really hit 165 mph in Stock Comp M5
A stranger recently bought a used 2014 Competition Package M5 and the first day, wide open freeway, he punched it and saw 165 mph on the heads up display. I thought this car should be limited to 155. What gives?
Speedometer error? Driver error? Does he have aftermarket software? Did the Comp package raise the limiter? Last edited by olis1; 10-12-2017 at 03:31 PM.. |

To OP,
I would not make a habit of disclosing that you broke the law on a public forum. Law enforcement monitors social media and you never know when a post like this can come back and bite you. Just looking out for a fellow M5 member. |

Seriously?? Do you not see all the videos posted on youtube and social media showing street racing to no end? Do you really think law enforcement would see this post and react to it?? That is rather comical.

BMW allowable speedo error is 10%+2.5mph. So, you could see as high as 173mph while "only" going 155.

I recall seeing 165 on my speedo during ED on the autobahn. One would need a GPS velocity tracker to verify accuracy

For this post it’s irrelevant how fast the car is actually going by GPS or otherwise. He said he saw 165 on the speedo.
The car “thinks” it’s going the speed reported on the speedo. If it was limited at 155 the car would limit to when the speedo read 155 no matter how fast it’s going. That being said I once ran my E60 M5 to 164 (on a track of course) without hitting the limiter and it was completely stock. Perhaps BMW may allow the M5 to go faster than 155 even though they say it’s limited because they would have upset customers if they couldn’t chase down a 535 on the autobahn? The speedos (not budgy smugglers) seem inaccurate at higher speeds - I was lucky enough to get x3 laps at Le Mans v early Sat am before the race in a stock M235 - it was showing 160mph before braking at the 200m marker board for the first chicane on the Mulsanne - it seemed nowhere near that fast & I seriously doubt I would have got it slowed down sufficiently to make the chicane.

I rather think its funny that some people never use gps to verify their speed. Garmin can be your best buddy.

Sorry, this is absolutely not correct. BMW programs in a margin of error to overstate the speed. There are serious penalties if the speedo is displaying a speed that is lower than actual.
