F10 M5 or 2015 M3
Hello,
Not sure when my last post was, maybe 6 years ago. I have driven an M3 since 2002, E46 and E92, but now need 4 doors. I was thinking of just going with the 2015 M3 which is longer and wider than the outgoing car. My children are very young so if were to take my car out on the weekend an M3 would be big enough. I had a chance to test drive an F10 m5 competition this weekend and it felt like an absolute beast. People write that the m5 is a super car and that is what it felt like. It is just me in the car 95% of the time and I think I prefer the slightly smaller car. The m3 is only about 2 inches more narrow and 10 inches shorter than the M5. I like the fact that the M3 is brand new with a refreshed appearance. The improved torque will make me not miss the V8. Well see about the new steering and The new nav screen is a bit annoying. I have read thru some threads of m3 or even m1 owners moving to the m5, most with no (or little) regret. Any other current or former M3 drivers out there who are thinking of or made the jump? Thanks for reading. E

Good question. I had a E m5 and then traded to a E m3. The smg in my m5 wasn't great. The manual m3 was great. The handling much better than the m5. So fast forward my m3 was coming up on being 5 years old so I put a deposit down on a new 2015 m3. Given it was new it was at msrp. A week later I started to consider a 2014 CP m5 that I could get at invoice. Still more expensive but I went for it and got it yesterday. Sure the handling isn't as good (although still excellent) but what a beast otherwise. A step above in luxury and what an engine. I sat in a new m3 at the New York auto show and I think the m5 is still a level above. No regrets. Now I also have three kids that are getting older so if I had no kids or very young that would make the choice more difficult. Good luck. Tough choice but either way you can't go wrong.

RPiM5 thanks for the links. I think I had read thru at least one of them over the last 2 days. I think your post in the first link sums it up for me
"The way I see it, if I wanted an all around car that can do just about everything, I'd get an F80. Track duty, haul the kids, put lots of stuff in the trunk, comfortable and luxurious enough for long road trips, etc. Kind of like a Jack of all trades, and pretty good at most of them." Probably will be the m3 for me, until I change my mind in an hour. E

Well I just came out of an E92 M3 and picked up an M5 Friday and it is an absolute blast to drive. Also the luxury appointments are outstanding. I'm loving the seats and the B&O stereo.

What about 2015 C63 or 2015 CLS63?
Got to be holistic about decent options.

I really don't want to make this a financial decision, just want to get the right car for me. I had one of the first e92s and don't mind paying sticker. Also, I plan on buying the car so the issue with the lease residuals won't apply. With that said there are some well equipped M5s around at great prices. I have 35k miles on my car after almost 6 years so I don't take many long drives in it. If I did or my kids were older, I would definitely go M5.

My wife has a mb, but the dealer is not very convenient. We did see an e63amg wagon the other day drive into our neighborhood when we were out walking. It was pretty awesome. I tried to find where it went but could not locate it. Maybe it had a stealth mode.

Stealth, what did I miss? Why all the MB love recently? Just based on new models?

things that changed: 1) An iDrive like interface in 2014 S Class which will cascade to 2015 C and maybe 2015 CLS (TBD on this last one) 2) HUD coming to above MB models in fall 3) Newer models (S and C) finally have an interior suitable to a modern luxury car. The E class by contrast has an interior that seems better suited for a KIA.

I think the needle may be swinging toward the M5. I have a little time because if I want it then I'll wait for a 15.
