With diesel engines, you get to play with 3-4k RPM's, then you have to shift again. Also a pretty jerky experience too.
Yes yes yes.

Back a few years ago I drove an X3 diesel manual around France for a few weeks and wanted to punch myself in the groin. Just when the fun starts as the revs rise, it ends abruptly. Shift shift shift.

I can't think of a driving experience more opposite than say, the holy grail of bimmers, the E30 M3.

I'm not a diesel hater, just don't think most people have driven a manual one.
My '10 VW TDI was manual. My '11 335d is auto (obviously). VW, 240 lb•ft. BMW, 425 lb•ft and almost an extra 1/2 a ton. 2nd-3rd WOT in the VW = whiplash. 2nd-3rd WOT in the BMW = BFG. All these Alphas screaming for a manual in the "d" is idiotic. The first "d" I drove, I was 13 and the damn thing had 2 shift levers and you had to double clutch every gear. My dad thought it was hilarious setting me behind the wheel of his '67 Peterbilt. Me, not so much.

Thinking this might be the perfect car for me: 320d Sedan with xDrive - but I live in the U.S. and need to wait patiently for it. Does anyone have any rough idea what pricing will be for this? Just looking basic assumptions.

The extra cogs in the new 8-speed ZF auto suit the narrow rev band of the high torque diesels much, much better.
I know you lot on the other side of the pond have some sort of bizarre hankering for sticks, but I've driven both side by side and the 6MT versions suck from a drive-ability point of view, as you all to easily come out of the narrow rev band of the diesel engines. They become very frustrating to drive after a while.

Meh. Americans have never had a reason to consider diesels in the past due to our low gas prices. It's a luxury to have a gasoline engine in Europe or a car at all for that matter. If diesels are for "real" enthusiasts why isn't there a 911 turbo diesel or a 458 diesel. I have driven a 335d and I think it's great but not better than the gas engine of a 335i. Why is your profile pic of Jeremy Piven? Maybe it's your head up your own ass.

there is confirmation that there will be a diesel x drive and it will start production for canada, and the states i would expect, at the beginning of july for delivery in august. in fact this is the only model that the bmw rep could confirm. expect it to be auto only though as they don't even bring a manual in the regular gas xdrive. this is canadian info so the states will probably get both since many place in the states want rwd only.

they didn't tell me anything about pricing, but i glanced at the price differential of the 320d x drive and the 328i x drive in germany. the 320d xdrive is 2000 euro less than the 328i x drive. he also mentioned that the four cylinder diesel might be 204hp, not 184hp, which is what the 320d is rated at. so maybe they are tweaking the 320d engine for NA? my feeling is bmw will only bring the automatic and sport auto leaving us manual drivers high and dry. i hope they try and slot the diesel a little below the 328i to fill in that gap but who knows, it's anybody's guess right now.

Better fuel consumption with a manual days are long gone guys. I can't imagine myself shifting the gears with only 5k rpm. If you do a lot of highway cruise then I guess it's okay but better let the BMW tranny do all the work on a diesel.

From the look of things, the new 8 speed is very well designed and can you imagine just 15 years ago my 528i only has the crappy gm (albeit reliable) 4 speed!

This is great news! I'll get myself a diesel as DD with all the comfort and economy and keep my M's for when I need to feed my speed bug.

X3 diesel is very tempting.

I'm glad I found this thread! This is what I've been hoping BMW would do!

I already know how I want it exactly.

320d RWD wagon sport line
Red leather interior
Alpine White
Navigation
heated seat

That'd be perfect.

Automatic is fine too. I could do without the manual for this one.

Diesel pricing differential in the US.

They won't.

Whether, BMW will apply this pricing difference in the US... Let's hope so, I think its competitive. Note that the 330d is Eur 6,790 ($8,800 !!) more expensive than the 320d.

I have been asking myself why BMW hasn't brought over their diesel line for years now. They are clearly not going to sell the % of numbers like in Europe but they will sell enough to justify bringing them over. My family will definitely be owning a diesel within a couple years. Probably when the initial line comes off lease.

We also need more hot hatchbacks but that's a different topic.

We got tired of waiting on BMW and went for a 2013 Audi A3 TDI for my wife. The new F31 would probably be too big for her tastes, but a 1 series hatch would have been nice. As usual, BMW is asleep at the switch.

She really loves the A3, which has been averaging between mid-30's to around 50 mpg (city vs. hwy.) and she loves it. I know it's a fancy Golf, but the Audi dealership is a nicer place to deal with than most VW dealers.

Just read that the F30's will NOT be getting the diesel but a hybrid instead. Anyone else read this?
I would love to have an X1 diesel but not likely.
I have been a diesel guy my entire life and lived in Europe for 3 or so years and drove a couple of diesels there.
US acceptance of diesels or lack there of is understandable given GMs folly and the smoking non turbo MB which put an end to any enthusiasm.
That was then this is now and attitudes are changing and will be changing as fuel prices go higher.
Do you really think Europeans like diesels because they like the diesel sound and messy fuel of the fact you get an immediate 30% better fuel economy because of more btu's per unit volume. If the gas engines got the same fuel mileage they all would be driving gas engines.

There are excellent diesels world wide and I hope and wish that the US starts to see them soon. BMW is making a start...

How about the X3 Diesel? I went to a Canadian dealership and of course they said there would be no 2014 X3 diesel - and it will not be around until at least 2015-2016.

I know you guys down south get things sooner BUT usually we get the same models you guys do ( I think the 320 and 323 were an exception - but I think the 320 is now available in the USA. )

So has anyone down south heard if the X3 Diesel is coming in 2014?

All you lot want bloody soot-chuckers, whereas as over here, we don't have a choice but to have a diesel if you want a X3....... petrol engined X3's aren't sold in the UK.

I'd love a N55 engined X3
