Any possibility of BMW offering a power upgrade?

I suppose the title says it all.


I have been reading & learning a LOT from many highly informed members - thanks ColdList for the many insights you have provided!



I started wondering, with BMW offering a power upgrade kit for some of their other turbo engines, and with the newer AMG models really offering some great performances from some of their cars, will BMW feel the need to follow suit?



I can't imagine there would not a be a lot of interest from owners looking at a hp/tq upgrade with a factory blessing.



I have heard rumors of this being a possibility from BMW, but nothing specific yet. Is there anyone else who has heard anything, or would be interested in such an idea?

It wouldn't be free because it would be optional. The Mclaren only got it because the power upgrade became standard on all 2013s. The one talked about here is an aftermarket option offered by BMW.

They do offer a free HP bump, it's called remove your charcoal filters :

Obviously with the tunes that are being developed - the power is there without exceeding the safety factors built into the car. BMW M Division is certainly feeling the pressure from Mercedes and others when it comes to horsepower/performance wars.

Yeah - that was really my point. I know BMW produces something for the 3 series, which I believe is just an ECU flash and a larger oil cooler (?). But, based on their M buyers, I would think a factory "upgrade" to give a bit more power would be well received. I have no real idea what a cost/benefit ratio would be for people.

But, if they were to say, here is an additional 50hp/ 50 ft/lb , no issues at all with your warranty, we would like $3000 - would that interest many members here? I think I would jump right on that. I realize that there are other factors limiting how much power one really needs, or could utilize, but I still think there is a nice market niche here for BMW.

I really wish I had the guts to do what some of you have done with much larger tunes - I would just feel more comfortable, at this point not messing around too much with stuff that could potentially void my warranty.

+1 agree completly. However on the $3000 part it would depend how that hp is added, if its just a tune then it's not worth it. However if its gained through mechanical changes such as say a cold air intake or down pipes ext... $3000 is a great value.

I for one would pay $3000 in a heart beat for a BMW tune that added a real 50hp taking the car to 610hp based on the same Dyno that BMW rates the car with at 560hp. This is especially true if it adds the additional horsepower throughout the range and not just in a couple of peak spots

Warranty is still a concern to most of us, even though I may pull the trigger on a tune as soon as I get some solid data from someone local.

I am sensing some real interest from my simple post.



While I would love to have such faith in those who have shelled out $$$ in the hope of gaining a bit more from various tuners - & trust me I wish I was in your camp! - I am just so much more comfortable shelling out a bit of money with the knowledge that I can sleep a bit more soundly knowing that if/when my car goes into the local dealership, no matter what I have done to the car, it will be covered under my warranty.


I know numbers are subjective - can I tell the difference between 560 or 600 hp? In all likelihood, probably not. Would I like to know that I have a factory supported 600hp engine under the hood - most definitely - is it worth my (subjective number) $3000 - most certainly!



Hopefully BMW will be considering those of us who yearn for a bit more, but under the comfort of the factory blanket.

agree the only tune I would consider would be dinan which usually warranties 2y/24k and doesn't void bmw warranty? If bmw came out with one I would be willing to pay double just to keep warranty intact. Since there are no longitudinal dataon the s63tu I would much rather have piece of mind with full warranty in effect

I 've always thought I need more power, until I got my 335d, 4 years ago, then an M3 and now my m5, only a lunatic would need more power than the m5, as I am learning to drive it, and hit the "sweet spot" ie on full nuke boost...its just amazing!

There's never 'TOO' much power. I got a ride from a friend in his twin turbo Lambo gallardos making 1100hp, after that everything seemed tame.

BMW didn't put more power in their last M "Star": M6 GC; they announced nothing for M5 LCI, so I doubt we'll see such an offer soon.

Lamborghini has AWD. You can have too much power on RWD.

Keeping the M5, and M6 series as "equals" is the best way about it.

I have always thought that the M5 platform is made for much more power than it has. Even the cooling features of this car is extreme for the power it holds. IMO, BMW set this car up perfectly for a future BMW PPK (Performance Power Kit).
