They probably just landed a big ad contract from BMW.

These things rags recommendations rarely have anything to do with the car.

They totally lost all credibility when they stated how much they love - and have always loved - iDrive as the best interface. These guys need to re-read their back issues.

We do
But the most important reviewer of M5 is M5 owners and when they are happy, who cares what mags have to say -

AGREED - Convenient short term memory staff at the mags.

The Panamera's low trap speed is due to an extremely low first gear. It has a very low first gear, but once in second gear the Panamera lags behind the others in acceleration.

Beat stat in the mag... M5 is slowest of the five 0-60, but the fastest in the 5-60.

Weirdly, the BMWs lowest ranking was for its gearbox(they were all automatics), which I find to be superior to just about anything out there save maybe PDK

I fail to see how an extremely low 1st gear would significantly impact the trap speed at the end of the quarter mile. The lack of relative power is the main culprit here

How good of a driver do you have to be to hit the gas pedal? My grandmother can run sub 12's in any of these cars.

Well, what the OP didn't say is that the E63 was the quickest car in the test and totally kicked the M5's ass in acceleration.

It beat it to 60 mph and in a 1/4 mile by half a second. Also it had a slightly higher trap speed.
But in evo mag testing the m5 won a 1000m drags race. So awd wins in the short run but ultimately slows down on top end runs.

Edit: maybe that was the old e63 pre face lift.

I think the mags like the new iDrive but hated the old version. I feel the same way. The original iDrive was terrible. gen2 is the best of whats out there IMHO.

I also agree with one of the above comments about the DCT. I think its fantastic around town. I had 2 previous E63 and really didn't like the MCT transmission as it never wanted to kick down when I wanted it too and thought it was very slow to respond. I may get flamed for saying this, but, I really felt the steering feel on the 2010 e63 was better than on my current M5. But, that and the exhaust note of the 6.2L was the ONLY thing I liked better.

My wife has a Panamera Turbo. As much as I'd like to join in the bashing of the ugly beast, it is by FAR a better track car than the M5 and the only 4 door I've ever driven that really FELT like a sports car. I've run both M5 and PT at MSR in DFW. Its really not close (1.5-2 secs/lap with my mediocre skills.....)

I'm a little surprised that R&T would take all of the track-ability performance criteria out of their article. At the end of the day, I love the way it looks and sounds (I have the Turner exhaust), utility, and driving position and (surprisingly) comfort of the M5. The PT is cramped (comparitively) in the back seat (like the M6GC) and I have 2 kids with baby seats that I need to haul around.

I would have loved to see what times these cars would do at the same track........ My guess: Panamera Turbo, M5, E63, RS7, Jag.

I think that's a pretty fair assessment.

Ringtimes: The Ring is longer than just about any track and probably benefits the higher horsepower M5 more, as compared to other tracks where the M5 would suffer--
Porsche Panamera Turbos S 7:52.00
BMW M5 7:55.00
Porsche Panamera Turbo 7:56.00

BMW claims the CP is supposed to be 10 seconds faster than the base M5 but nothing official posted as of yet.

With all these cars, you are just picking your flavor of ice-cream...

Wow, 10 seconds faster in the ring would put the CP M5 even above the new M3/M4 (BMW says the new M3 will be 10+ seconds faster than the outgoing M3 which does 8:05 in ring).

I think the M5 would be the Salted Caramel of the bunch.
