Life Question.

Good evening everyone who reads this thread. I would like to say that it will be more about the question than an M5. That being said my name is Matt Harris, just turned 16 on Dec. 31. So here it is, I'm currently a sophomore in high school making relatively high grades. Nothing below B (stupid biology). I have not yet decided on what I would like to do to for living, but I have been planning of becoming an architect, and I do know that cars motivate me to do all my work, stay away from that weed that my friends offered today for the weekend, and generally I stay out of trouble. I am very thankful to my adopted parents who went through hell and back to bring me here to Indiana from Latvia in 2010. They are a very large inspiration to me and have changed me 180 degrees. Anyway I do have to say that I absolutely respect all of you here because I'm more than sure that you all hate this question, so what do you do for living. I know it's an absurd question and I do understand if it came across as sensitive or offensive, but this will give me the information and let me choose my classes and career easier because the milestone I want to achieve is own a BMW e46 in Laguna Secca Blue, and beautiful white F10 M5. So I was wondering what you the M5 owners do to purchase such a car.
Either way thank you so much for reading this, and I will take every answer in mind and every answer will motivate me to work even harder and once again sorry for the question
Thanks again, Good night.

Do what you love. Cars won't bring you happiness. I'm gonna guess your motivations will change, young grasshopper. It's all good.

But to answer your question, a general surgeon. I will say, I kinda wish I had fallen in love with another way to make a living because it's hard work. But I didn't.

sounds like you have a good head, kid.

I trade Energy/Oil futures for a living. It's certainly not glamorous, but it puts food on the table. When I was much younger (I am 42), I also wanted to be an architect. I really think I had some talent there...but, I made some bad choices and took the wrong path. I smoked that weed you speak of on the weekends, etc, and ended up struggling through my early 20's with some serious issues. I have a great Mom that did her best to keep me going....Then I just ran across the right people that just thought I might be able to sell. And I did! No, I wasn't drawing blueprints like I had dreamed, but I was doing well and selling product for my new employer. Before long I was on the floor of the mercantile exchange trading fuel, energy, and chemicals (like I said, not glamorous). And my education is not Ivy League. More like high school league, if you can't tell.

I truly believe any success in my life has been the result of cars. Don't laugh, but I seriously mean that. I have always been such a car nut that with every job i took, in the back of my mind, I was asking myself what car I could afford. So, If its cars you want then cars you will have. It just might drive you the way any other passion could.

PS. There are two groups of folks I love and respect more than any others, in this order: Our Military: Veterans/Active duty/Reserves/Recruits/Missing/Dead. And then the people who bring a kid like you into their home and provide a good life for them without question. You are already on your way dude. Just the mention of your parents impressed me most.

Later, and all the best. Pete.

When I was in middle school I created my own business. In high school I started to invest my time in order to grow it. I owned a nice car then. It really helped as it represented success and immediately offset any concerns about my age - a significant barrier to earning and signing on new clients.

My business at the time was a priority, but I balanced it along with high school and hanging out with friends.. so I was not 100% invested in it. I was able to make good money throughout my high school years, the last two being the best fiscal years for my business.

Not everyone has the mindset or desire, but becoming an entrepreneur is rewarding. Especially if you don't like working for other people. Always keep your mind open to new ideas and potential opportunities.

Even though I was only in HS, I didn't feel right if I wasn't making an income. I made the time to make sure I did. If I was too busy at times I would find a way to out source work. Some clients I 80% out sourced and still turned a decent profit at the end. When I had the time I did the work myself and turned a much larger profit. So while it was an added responsibility, I had a way to keep up and maintain my clients, even when I didn't actually have the time.
It's always important to work smarter, not harder, and stay as creative as possible.

Being motivated to succeed is key whether that is for cars currently or something else.

I would say probably the biggest choice is less what career you enter but whether you work for yourself or someone else.

In my experience you are always balancing key dimensions which balance is most important to you will likely change over time.

1. The work how interesting it is to you personally.
2. Work /life balance.
3. Money.

If it helps I work as a consultant in financial services.
