Packages/Options you can live without?
Looking at the M5, there aren't that many packages to choose from really, but the ones there are, they are very expensive...
I wanted to ask, those of you who do own this car right now, of all the options or packages you have, if you could go back, which ones would you give up? Would you configure your car differently? Competition Package : This is such an expensive package, it moves the monthly payment of the car by as much as $125. Ridiculous. Unfortunately every person I spoke to or review I read says that this is how M5 should have come out from the factory 2 years ago. Full leather : I guess this is really one of those things that make the M5 exclusive. Full merino leather just looks amazing. Leather dash, etc. Driver Assist : Not sure I really need this, but with high residuals, this is about $25/month option. Lightning Package : Same as above B&O Sound : Similar to the full leather, moves the monthly by around $50-60/month. I listened to this back to back after HK and yes there is a massive difference. The way I see it is this. Executive package is a must. Rest is really in this order : Comp > Full leather > B&O > Driver Assist > Lightning Package. That being said, I'm thinking it makes sense to either go with executive package only and save over $200/month or just go with all. What does everyone think? If I just drop the driver assist and lightning, that's like $50/month, then you start thinking like, if I'm paying all this money, will $50 stop me? No! Then add this and add that! And here we go with a loaded car. |

I have all the packages that you have listed and am glad that I got each of them. Lighting package with the coding to allow the glare free feature is very cool. But I am the guy who will always regret not getting the extra to the extent that it would detract from the purchase. At the end of the day, only you know you and what your preferences or values (even warped ones like mine) are. At the end of the day, the base M5 is a wonderful car.

Haven't made up my mind fully yet, my pre-order is still on for the M3, but I'm leaning towards the M5 more. I'm getting some ridiculous deals with the M5 residuals which are going to get even better with the 2014 production ending soon. Couple that with the terrible residuals that are bound to hit us for the M3/M4 make the M5 a very good proposition.
The interior is a beauty and to be honest with you I think I'm a bit tired of the rough ride/rattling interior/oh-let-me-get-out-of-the-car-to-reach-my-back-pocket small interior. Each car has its own place and surely you can toss an M3 around more and track it better, but guess what, 3 years of M3 ownership and how many times have I tracked it? 0. How many times I have done launch control? 0. How many times have I actually driven the car in a way where I could actually see it's positives over M5's negatives (weight/size/etc), 0. I'm a married guy with kids who wants power and I want ///M. I don't know if M3 is the right car for me anymore. But who knows, I may do a 180 turn in a month. The only thing worrying me about the M5 is the long term cost, everything costs more about this car, tires, wheels, gas, insurance, you name it. I could easily do my own maintenance in the M3. Oil changes, tires, wheels, basic brake job, even the diff fluid. But I was able to do those because of the long list of DIY threads and youtube videos. Guess what, there isn't a single one of them for the M5, heck not even a DIY oil change. Different market, different demographic. But yes, I have been seriously considering this car now more and more. |

My opinions are: 1) Full Leather ( love the look) 2) HUD (very usefull when speeding, and NAV) 3) 20" wheels (prefer stock wheels to time to baby sit bent wheels/nicks and scrapes) The standard stereo was fine for me because I listen to talk radio more than anything, and it works for my music taste in a car. If the CP was available when I purchased I would have not purchased because this car does more than what I need it to do. If you are a big track person which your not based on your post is it needed? Cameras for me are a joke I no how to park, and don't need visual aids. Soft close doors I had on my 7 series cool at first, and the cool factor disappears really fast. I wanted a fast luxury saloon with four doors, and you can have the other toys. Good luck on your choice, and this is why a plethora of options exist. Some people feel they need all of them so they can say my car is loaded. Just my two cents. |

Skip driver assistance package. Never use any of that functionality - except the posted speed limit is kind of cool. Not worth 2k.
Agree that full leather makes the car feel special I would do B&O again If you're concerned about monthly payment, then only mandatory items: 1. Exec pkg 2. 20" wheels |

Well unfortunately I just got my car from the car lot, instead of special ordering mine. But I wish I had competition pack but I think $7300 is too much for what you get but I would of got it over the executive package, and I do not know why its only $6000 on the M6 GC. If your leasing the car the carbon ceramic brakes are not worth it, but if you buy it then its worth the 9k because they last a lift time of the car, only negative I hear its not that durable and could get your rotors damage and calipers pads. But Bang & Olufsen is worth it, it sounds amazing and so clear also I recently got voucher for free headphones to claim it at store that are worth $165. I like the full leather my car has it but do not think it is worth the $4000. Driver Assistance is extremely helpful but bad part it kind of makes you a bad driver in the sense you rely on it, but as we are use to driving cars without that package you can manage without it. The lighting package is a must it looks amazing, I do not know how a LCI M5 looks like without one but I hear it looks like a non-LCI one. So that's my opinion hope that helped. What color are you getting exterior wise?

Has anyone ever compared the difference in standard spec between UK and US, looks like we get a lot more standard kit in the UK - although we pay a lot more for the car in the first place?
Apologies if this is a newb question and has already been covered. |

Regarding competition package and tracking the car, my M3 does have competition package and I can tell you while similar arguments can be found in the M3 forums, there is more to it than that. I never tracked my car either, but the main selling point for the M3's ZCP was for me the ZCP wheels in addition to the 1cm lowered height. Now M3's ZCP was less than half of M5's ZCP (3k vs 7.3k), so the decision was easier, but I disagree that ZCP is all about tracking.
First of all, the stock wheels M5 comes with in my view are terrible. To each his own, but they really don't look that good. They look like a flower from a distance, too girly in my opinion and I was never fan of wheels that had that particular design. It looks too empty, I don't know and it doesn't look great when it's a 20" wheel. Second of all, I heard the stock and ZCP exhausts in the M5 side by side and I could easily tell the difference, especially in cabin, ZCP sounds so much better and louder. Third, the steering is quite different. The stock M5 drives closer to a 5 series whereas the ZCP one is more like an M3. It's a lot more direct, a lot less forgiving. It's hard to quantify with words, but if you cannot tell the difference, then you are driving the wrong car for the wrong reasons and no you do not have to track the car to feel the difference. Everything else is hard to really utilize in every day driving such as the stiffer suspension, re-mapped differential and MDM, and so on. So maybe yes, those are better for people tracking, but if you take the whole ZCP package, I'd say 80% of the cost went towards the 3 points above, rest is all pretty much marketing. Honestly one of the biggest reasons I didn't go for the M5 2 years ago was the wheels. I had an opportunity to get someone to take over my M3 lease flat and I could get into an M5, but for some reason I never liked those wheels. They make the car look so fat and over-sized. Because of this, I'm most likely going to get the competition package if I do end up getting the M5. For me wheels and exhaust are very important, I think this is how the car should have come out of the factory 2-3 years ago as a base model. I have never seen any other M car where the ZCP package made this much difference, it certainly didn't in the previous M3s. It's probably why they are charging so much money for it. |

Anyone else have any experience with it? To the OP, I went with the CP for the wheels, exhaust and lower stance. It was purely a cosmetic decision and an expensive one I realize. And I didn't want to go aftermarket especially on a leased vehicle. I often wonder if I should have spent that money on B&O and full leather. But I'm happy. Exec is a must for the heads up display alone. And I think the lighting is a must. |

It all comes down to what "you" want, not what "we" say you should get.
When it was my time to build my allocation I skipped the extended leather and B&O because I didn't need them in the car. I like the CP package and wouldn't have ordered the car without it.

Got a CP with all except B&O, CCB, and full leather....only thing I kinda regret not getting if full leather but depending on int color as well, My RRS SC had leather everywhere and it did make a huge difference on the luxury "feel" but don't thinks it's necessary...IMHO I would definitely have regretted skipping anything else

I can live without the rear wood shelf option, CCBs, Night vision and rear seat entertainment. To me CP is a driving style and ride quality preference.

My options, in order: executive (for HUD above all else)>CP>LED lighting (with coding -- one of the everyday-use benefits) > Full leather > drivers assistance > B&O. I ordered everything above, except for B&O. Next time I will get the B&O -- the HK is too mundane; its the same as in my three series. Would not get CCBs, night vision, rear entertainment.

full leather is a not needed in my view.
Leds are a must though- the light clarity is mental, so much better than xenon.

What is this led coding everyone talking about that makes led lights a big deal?
Also, regarding the full leather, I'm actually a bit concerned about too much leather. My interior will be silverstone and while full leather looks really good on dash, the lower parts of the doors and back of the front seats are going to be extremely hard to keep clean. I have a 3 year old and even with the plastic parts in my current M3, these areas I mention have permanent scuff marks that just won't go away. I dont know how durable the Merino leather is, but if the same happens, a) it's going to look absolutely terrible, i dont think that color is going to hide these marks as good as black, and b) it will probably cost me serious money to get these removed/repaired when I'm returning the car. I always wondered how practical silverstone leather is really. That being said, there are no other options. I'm sick of fox red in my current car, so not going to get sakhir orange and there is no way I'm getting black interior, it's too boring. Last edited by RealStig; 02-19-2014 at 07:34 AM.. |

If he is leasing he is only going to pay 45% of the $3700 cost of the B & O. To start with BAV sound and install then remove at the end of the lease is not worth the hassle. Better off just doing the B & O on a lease.
