39 Months: plugging the numbers in for a 39 month lease would increase my deal for my build by only $27 per month. That's an uplift of 2.8% per my current monthly lease based on Oct residuals. Not the end of the world...

Again, check w/ your CA to confirm if you're already locked for October's residuals. I double checked with mine and I'm still good for Oct even though I don't pick my ED M5 up until Nov 21st.

Good luck!

So, literally in the 2 minutes since I posted he got back to me and said that they could only lock in rates 90 days prior to delivery. So, Jan build and March delivery means Dec rates. I am hoping for for a better deal off MSRP. I corrected my post above where I wrote 65% off MSRP, lol. He also said they would make it work out :roll eyes: Will have to see what Dec brings, but I've frankly thought BMW's held their value well and didn't expect quite an abrupt drop. I also was considering a 24 most lease, but seems like they're pushing 39 mos. Not sure I want to go that long, but I guess the new M5 will be out and perhaps the comp edition by then.

How this is possible??? it's kind of weird!! 39 months has better residual?
it means after 36 months /10K the residual is 57% and 3 months later is 58%? So if the customer returns the car after 36 months, then dealer keeps the car in lot for 3 months to increase the value??I know they both have the same 10K, but usually car loses the value by time more than by mileage right?

The cost of registering your car for 1 year for 3 months of use should be factored in. One way or another you are getting shafted. Its going to be either $125 per month or ~ $3600 of depreciation (additional 3 payments 36 vs 39). Just depends how you like it. 36 month would be better to save against the 4th year of DMV registration costs.

Look, granted I'm in the medical field, certainly not a finance geek and I don't understand the nuances of residual value, money factor and the rest. But, I do have common sense and I agree with your point, this makes no sense to me. I also don't understand how a 36 mos lease residual can drop 7%! Unless, they think the market will be flooded after a slew of 2012 car leases/finances are up. Hopefully, someone here that knows how the exact numbers are arrived at will chime in.

Historically, November and December residuals have been the same. At least as long as I have been following all of my favorite bimmer forums. I have never seen a 36 months residual on M5 at 62%. That was very unusual. Normally, in the mid-50s.

In terms of residual dropping etc. These decisions are made in smoky dark rooms of BMWFS. We can have long discussion about how and why BUT it's is what it is.

lol, I guess so. Really had no idea this was expected. The M5 would be my 6th BMW since 2006 since I've owned 2 at the same time since 2012. My residuals have always been around 61% when I signed. I guess I'm incredibly uninformed.

You probably already know that residual changes monthly and is different per model. Heck the residual on Z4 was like 73% last month.

Which is why if you do a lease where it's over 2 or 3 years (like 27 or 39 months), do a pull ahead at the end of the 36th month. You return the car, get the last payments waived, and don't have to pay for another year's registration

Looks like i'm going to stay with Mercedes. I was waiting to see how the holidays would match up, but with this decrease in residual, the S class is looking much more attractive to me.

I have until the end of the year... so maybe things will change, but I doubt it. Guess I won't be returning to BMW for at least a couple more years.

Seriously, it's disappointing. I'm a BMW M fan because I like the engine, look, chassis and drivetrain. Not neceesarily in that order, but, I'm back to now looking at the E63 S amongst others. I would really like a bigger car than my current M3, but have an X5 for winter and can otherwise get a 911, f-type R, etc... that I'm interested in, plus a winter vehicle if needed for less. Just would prefer the M5. Bummer.

i ordered my M5 in the third week of october with a residual of 61% at 10k miles. i was sweating bullets when i found out the residual dropped for November. thankfully since my order went through in October my SA advised i was not subject to the monthly payment increase resultant from the residual drop. my m5 completed production on the 31st of october and is waiting for loading onto the ship. I will also hopefully get the holiday credit of $2,000 to be applied to the contract price so the payments per month on this lease will be dropped by an additional $55.00 for 36 months.

Just make sure your CA does not play with MF instead!
ie changing the MF from 0.0013 to 0.0016 for a 100K car with 61% residual after tax (8%) is about $52 per month. Based on current APR (3.12%) your MF must be 0.0013

Good point variable! In order to accommodate my own M5 ED delivery I need to extend my M3 lease out by 1 to 2 months and yes, will be forced to pay for an additional year of tabs to Washington state. It's ~$208 to renew, or in my head, an additional ~$6 per month over the prior 36 month lease. The M5 would be a little bit more to renew tabs on in WA state, however it's a nominal cost difference. I don't believe we get raked in comparison to CA state.

It's like buying toothpaste at the grocery store.. sometimes the bigger tube costs less than the smaller tube. They want you to buy the bigger 39 month tube...

I've sold a lot of 3 year software contracts in my time which has caused unnatural sales volume spikes in December and June. I would love to be able to renew those w/ 39 month contracts in order to smooth out the sales volumes for my team. BMW is probably doing something similar because they can...

A number of states transfer (read credit) the time left on the registration.. I don't think CA does but WA might if I recall correctly..

Unfortunately, you can't have it both ways. You locked into October incentives and residual with your order. You can give that up and take November incentives and residual. Can't pick and choose.

Thanks for clarifying. I'm in a similar situation. Signed in October for a December 1 ED. I was pretty sure that I wouldn't be able to pick and choose.

I'll just stick w/ the October Residual and Incentive.

With a simple calculation, the total amount of lease is almost identical.
For a 100K car, considering 0.0013 MF and California tax (8%) the total lease payment of 36 months /10 K is [43000 + 36 * 0.0013 *157000] *1.08 = $54375
The same calculation for 39 months/10 K is [42000 +39*0.0013 *158000]*1.08 =$54011 + one extra (the last year) registration fee of $400-500....So in case of 36 months the monthly payment is $1510.4 while in case of 39 months the monthly payment is $1384.9 ... ~$125 saving per months but 3 more extra months and one extra registration...

208? holy crap.
My 2012 Nissan Frontier cost me $350 to renew! My SL550 was $666! (yes the devil's number)
my M3 was $800 IIRC back in 2010. My 335i was $700 back in 09.

so I'm surprised my SL is so "cheap"

M5 registration is probably around $700, just like my SL

Hey with all these bad deals out there, maybe I should let someone take over my 2014 M5 lease at $920/month plus tax? 4000 miles on the clock. Hmmmmm......
