UK fuel, what do you use?

Okay new to the M5, picked her up last week and loving it. The power and noise is sublime.

Question though. Which fuel are you all using, standard or premium?

1st 2 tank fulls I've used Shell V Power.

Doesn't it really make any difference and is it worth the extra £5 ish a tank full (typical Scotsman lol)

No joking aside, I've no issue with the added cost, but is it better for the car? And is there anything better than Shell V Power?

V power, it doesn't seem to like anything else.

V power has the highest octane rating (99) of any standard fuel along with the Tesco stuff but I won't put that in, all the other supers are 97ron.

(to the US guys those are UK ratings different to yours)

Use Premium
These are hot running turbo engines, not little VW or Vauxhaull engines.
As your weather gets warmer the ECU will start pulling back the timing on low octane fuel to prevent detonation.

Esso & Shell, sometimes BP

always Premium

My M135i used to run perfectly on Regular and that was a hot Turbo engine. I just follow what BMW recommend

Our weather doesn't really get warmer! But I take your point that's why we use 99 ron fuel.

Thanks so far guys, why not tesco 99 ron? Since posting I've dug a little deeper and it's kinda 50/50 on the Tesco fuel, only reason I ask, I have 3 stations nearby me:

Closest Shell motorway service station (modern day robbers lol)
Next is Tesco about 5 miles.
Next she'll is 19 miles away, I go nearby most days anyway.

Tesco would be the easy option as have to pass it both ways no matter where I'm going.

Think it may have to do with ethanol content from different stations..

There's a few UK members on here who will chime in soon I'm sure

None of my 4 M cars have liked it and the fact I've been a supplier to Tesco for 20 years might have coloured my judgement.

But plenty of people rave about the Tesco 99 fuel but I've never liked it.

They will all run fine on Regular since the ECU will just pull the timing back as needed(reducing power, ect ect).

Under certain circumstances Regular will produce full power, it all depends on Air temperature, Air density, engine temperature, throttle position, engine load ect ect.
Premium will allow full power more of the time.

I heard a few years ago that British Petroleum sells BP Ultimate 102 which has 102 RON Octane. Apparently it's the highest octane rating unleaded fuel in the UK.

Do they still sell it there?

I always use Shell V-Power but that's mainly because it's the only garage I pass regularly.

It's probably just me, but the car always feels a bit stuttery just after filling up. A quick blast down the slip road wakes it up though and all is fine.

Tesco 99 has done fine by me for the past 12 months, its the closest garage also. I have put the usual unleaded in on occasion when they are out of premium and tbh cant really tell the difference. Its all a big CON!!

If it's anything like the USA, most of the petrol comes form the same place. Only the detergent packages change from one vendor to another.
