Next-gen V10 M5?
So many of you who've been on the forum for a decent amount of time will recognize Scott26, a BMW insider who comments somewhat regularly on Bimmerpost and posts high-quality insider info. Naturally, I was very excited when I saw this post today:
In it, he talks about the return to an all new V10 for the next M5/M6. Like most others, I'll believe it when I see it but any thoughts? Last edited by 414M3; 08-02-2014 at 01:18 PM.. |

I just don't see it happening. The US CAFE ratings are driving manufacturers to develop high HP cars with decent fuel economy. They are accomplishing that through the use of forced induction on smaller displacement engines. They could do a small displacement V10 with turbos...but I am not sure that is worthwhile sine what people want would be a high revving N/A engine. They could do something like the i8 and make a hybrid electric car that also utilizes a small displacement V10 and make it light weight. But that seems so out there..... Like an M-Prius. Like I said, I just don't see them going against the grain even on a lower production model.

One of the main reasons the M5 went from V10 to V8 was due to the green laws such as CAFE.
At first thought I was thinking no way. BMW now has the i series, which could allow them to bring a V10 engine back to the M5. An M5 that uses the latest generation M3 tech (carbon) with a V10 motor. Not holding my breath on it, but that would bring the special factor back to the M5.

Def don't think they would do away w/ rear real drive but they'll need to work on the chassis or whatever. RWD 700hp would be tough for me to handle, honestly, MDM or not.

It would not surprise me to see a TT V-10 and a 4,000lb target weight (before AWD). If Dodge can make a Challenger (Hellcat 707 HP) today, M branch needs to think about future proofing this next M5 with its 7-year cycle. As such, they will need to do something special. Of course the Hellcat is not really a competitor, but in a way cars like this are from a pure power perspective...another bogey. The M5 has been able to outperform virtually any car except a super exotic. I also think there will be some hybrid aspect to it for low end torque. Hybrid is coming to all the top cars it seems (for better performance as much as anything). This would all be very exciting if true. What a car that would/could be. Just make it rumble pls.

If it goes to 4,000 lbs, it better be AWD, as we will never get the car in a straight line due to excessive tire spin. People complain now that its too heavy, but traction would be even worse if it wasn't this heavy.

I was also reading today that the next Panamera Turbo S (2017) will use hybrid power to get to 700 HP. Yet another bogey...and this one a more important one (than the Hellcat). To me, it's now baked that the 2018 G-series M5 will be an under-rated 650 HP or nameplate 700HP! The competition may be dragging M branch higher than they were originally intending. It absolutely has to be the case that the M Gang is designing the car NOW... So pls keep those comments coming everyone. Let's tell our good friends at M what we want (while enjoying our current beasts)! |

I was thinking about going a different route in the next few years. If V10 makes a comeback then I am definitely buying another M5. Hope you're listening BMW. TTV10, make sure to make it sound decent.
