Carbon Ceramic to Iron Brake Conversion

Hello f10/f06/f12/f13 M5/M6 CCB owners!!!

I am currently working with Warren from RacingBrake on an iron rotor conversion for my carbon ceramic brakes. Our current rotors are pretty damn thin (24mm!!). This upgrade will replace our stock CC rotors with 28mm thick iron rotors and new, larger brake pads.

There are currently no CCB swap for our cars on the market right now!!

This is from Warren - "Here are two example of rear rotor kits that are made to 390x28 rotors for the prospective F10 M5 rear upgrade from OE's 396x24:

Telsa Model S Plaid Rear BBK (OE caliper kit) - M5/6 will be similar to this set up
https://racingbrake.com/TES-IRK-410.390/

Required components for F10/f06/f12/f13 rear retrofit upgrade kit to F90.
F90 Rear calipers x 2 (BMW)
Custom caliper brackets x 2 (RB)
Custom 390x28 2 pc rear rotors (RB)
Minimum run 20 kits (40 rotors)
We can also include the rear calipers (new from BMW dealership) and brake pads (street and track).

Price should be around the kits above. Leadtime 12-16 weeks after 20 pre-orders w/ 30% deposit received.

Some info on RacingBrake if you don't already know:

They have been around since 1985 supplying quality parts to major distributors in North America and has earned a reputation in the industry, Their major customer base is currently Porsche track enthusiasts as they make the Carbon Ceramic conversion for the 911s.

They also make some BMW brake kits but they like the rest of the market, do not have a carbon ceramic conversion for our f06/f12/f13 m6!!

Warren over there is the owner there, I spent about an hour talking to him and he said if I could gather enough interest, they would move forward in the development process.

RacingBrake uses rigid material specifications, manufacturing standards, and extensive test and inspection procedures.

Let me know, I want to be able to beat my brakes up on the track without spending 10's of thousands of dollars!!!

Why wouldn't you just buy used set of calipers and new rotors from M5?

F10/F13 rear brackets are made to fit OE 396x24 larger and skinnier rotors which are not available.
So you need a bracket like the F90 to fit 390 or 380x28 rotor, but unfortunately it can't be mounted to the F10/F13 spindle due to different mounting spreads, this is an usual scam played by car mfgrs to disallow easy swapping but we know the tricks

I get the thickness but what are you solving for? If you just want to replace the CCB with Iron, the cheapest and fasters option would be to go with OEM that has already been designed for the car and set proper bias between front and rear brakes.

1. Larger pads (F90)
2. Thicker rotors/Better rotor aspect ratio (390 or 380x28 vs. F10/F13's 396x24)
3. Improved brake design over F10/F13 (Per BMW)

For the beast that the F10/F13 are, the rotors are extremely thin and the pads are smaller than they should be. Not adequate to be beat up on the track by a vehicle with the weight and speed of an m5/m6.

24mm (what we have now) is the same thickness rotor as much smaller lighter care with less power: Impreza, Supra, Cayman, etc.

The e92 and f80 m3 have 30mm front and 24mm rear. Why?? Because people track m3s way more so we essentially got skimped.

But I do want to track my car more often and am concerned about rotor wear and damage stopping all 4,300lbs over and over and over at high speeds.

With track use, our thin rotors become susceptible to faster wear and even hairline cracks. They solved this problem on the F90 which is why you get the 28mm thick rotors and larger brake pads. This is a better alternative and can last 3-4x longer than what we have now.

Regarding our rotors being designed for our cars, as I said I don't think they thought they would spend much time at the track *♂️

RacingBrake does extensive testing and has their setups on thousands of track cars. They're not AP or Brembo, they're local but have been around forever. I trust their reputation!

Honestly looking at the OEM brake pads, I can't really tell which one has less area. The picture you posted doesn't seems to match what I found on bimmerworld.

Like I said I would worry a lot more of messing with the bias by increasing the stopping power on the rear. I am sure Racingbrakes has a lot more experience and can tune that with pads and rotors for you, or the change is so small that might not make difference. Usually your front brakes does ~70-75% of the stopping. In race cars you can adjust the brake bias between front and rear. Let us know how your conversion goes and your track feedback.

I won't be tracking my car but I have been looking for aftermarket CCB options or possibly switching to an iron rotor setup. Although not having to deal with break dust build up has be leaning towards just biting the bullet and staying with the ccb's.

yeah, I love the CCBs to the point I wouldn't own another car without. Not having to deal with replacement and dust is amazing. I do track my car but would be 1-2twice a year. Maybe one day I can afford GT3 for my track use lol

100% I don't want to mess with the bias in any way that will affect my performance either lol. I've spent a lot of time on the phone with Warren though, and this guy has been living and breathing brakes for over 35 years!!! I will keep you guys posted. Right now, I need to rally all my f10/f13 guys who track semi-frequently interested in a conversion to make it worth his time. This is my dream though....Everyone says GT cars aren't track cars but they're wrong. Our cars whoop in the straightaways but lose time in the corners. Simple as that. And I've been on a serious journey to prove everyone wrong LOL.

Yeah our rotors are so expensive man, I just can't do it!!! Obviously daily driving you get a lot of life. Not so much on the track. But brake fluid has a LOT to do with it also. I recommend using Castrol SFR Racing brake Fluid and doing a brake flush once a year. It will extend the life of our CCB significantly!

I absolutely would love to track the car. Florida has a lot of tracks and I used to do track weekends on Ducati and camp out with the family and friends. Good times.

I am going to follow the thread and keep up with the cost and likelihood that the order will run.

Sounds a cost effective way to replace worn out or damaged expensive CC brakes with racing spec larger cast iron set up and larger pads.

Anyone try these steel rotors to replace the CCB? Seems they sell a direct replacement… Any issues?
