Tyre choice

I have a Singapore Grey competition pack M5 which I took delivery of earlier this year. This is my forth M5 however the first with Pirelli P ZERO', all other cars have had Michelin Super Sports fitted.

I would describe my car as dangerously unpredictable in comparison to my previous cars which is hugely disappointing given I opted for the Comp Package, this can only be down to tyres? I am really interested in hearing thoughts and other experiences?

I am removing the Pirelli's this week and replacing them with the Michelins however I am really interested to hear other experiences with Tyres on an F10 M5.

PZero is a good tire. If anything I'd switch to 99Y 305/30/20 tires for rear stock wheels.

Went through 2 sets of PSS on my 14 and my 16 came with PZero (both with ZCP) I was disappointed at first but after 5k havnt really noticed any difference in performance. I actually like the look of the PZero better for some reason and they seem to be quieter on the interstate. I know PSS is is a "better" tire but havnt decided which I'm going with when I pull the trigger on wheels. I have read that you only get about half the mileage from PZero bs PSS so that would be the deciding factor

As a note to all, I changed the Pirelli P Zero's to Michelin and its made the M5 the car BMW intended it to be! I am now delighted with the additional performance the competition pack offers which I was simply not able to access with the Pirelli tyres.
The Pirelli P ZERO's still had 6.5mm on the front and the rear tyres had 5mm (both start with 7mm).
I am sure there are a number of differing experiences; however in the British climate the Michelin's have been tremendous advantage over the Pirelli’s. Without this experience personally I simply would not have believed the difference tyres could have on the performance of a car in particular given both tyre’s in question here are from manufacturers considered to be premium. Please note BMW!!!

I have a feeling you were running the wrong loading... what sizes where they and loading? The correct size and loading would have felt much better than the PSS. I was pushing high HP and they gripped and cornered well.

I own a tyre store and have had the opportunity to test a number of different sizes and brands . The star rated (BMW) Michelin OE sizes are the best by a country mile . I should mention the downside is higher road noise on some surfaces .

Tyre Choice

That is really interesting to hear you say that as a tyre expert and I would agree fully with both points. The Michelins are significantly louder on road noise, however the upside of performance is tremendous. I have now done 2000 miles on them and they get better with every outing.

Is seems a little strange to say however I had lost all confidence in the car with the Pirelli's, almost scared to use it as I felt it was going to ill me and I have driven an M5 for over 10 years, now the car is great and highly predictable so delighted with the outcome.

I should also note that BMW paid for my replacement tyres, 100% which was over £1,200 which again tells me that they were aware of the issue and although reluctantly paid for the replacements as they acknowledged mycar was "unpredictable".
