Dyno numbers: RK Autowerks intake
**Please keep the bickering in the other thread. I'm just posting numbers and impressions about my car with the RK intakes.
Some of what I'll say is repeated (and buried) in the other RK thread. But basically I never believed intake systems could produce any significant gains. Of course this opinion came from moding/playing with NA motors for the past 15 yrs. So here I am with a twin turbo v8 pushing numbers in the 600s. And after researching a little to discover that a proper intake can actually free up 20-30+whp, well I was set on picking up something. Obviously I tried the simpler intake mod of removing the charcoal filters and replacing the air filters with BMS dropins. I also bought AP CF air scoops cuz it cant hurt right? So with this setup and a Stage 1 dyno tune from Mission Performance, I put down 678whp/645wtq on a dynojet at some shop in Fullerton?? on a Saturday morning (cant even remember the city, lol). After that I decided that I needed a "home base" dyno shop that's close to me and that I can compare numbers after making different mods/setups with the M5. I chose EAS in Anaheim because they're a well known shop and I'm probably there once a month to buy or check things out. I went in and got a "baseline" dyno on 08/16/16 and put down 639whp/649wtq. Wait, WTF happened to 40whp!! LOL. Ah well, those who've been around dynos know that different dynos will read slightly different numbers, along with variables like ambient temps. The Mission numbers were done in the morning with ambient in the 70s. EAS numbers were at ~2pm and ambient in the high 90s. But no biggie, car feels the same ever since the flash tune. Fast forward and I've decided to try out the RK Autowerks intakes after reading up on Raza's intake thread a few months ago (that was deleted). I'm impressed when a developer/vendor puts his product out there to be scrutinized and doesnt back down when questioned; it shows complete confidence and passion in their product. And admittedly, the price point was comfortable for me. Raza was quick to respond on his facebook and also helped out over the phone with install questions. It seemed like he was pretty easy to get a hold of if you have questions; always a good thing with someone taking your money (although I purchased the RK intakes used from a forum member). Of course my dyno numbers today 09/08/16 will be questionable because I didnt do pre/post intake on the same day. MSIXCARBON's results are probably a tad more accurate in that regard. But at least the dyno I used was the same and ambient was about the same with the EAS baseline I did a few weeks ago; it was mid/high 90s today in the shop. I also believe these type of intakes will perform better at speed than on a dyno with fans. So...my dyno numbers with the RK Autowerks intakes were 660s whp/ 650s wtq. I gained about 20whp and a few wtq from my old setup of BMS dropins and charcoal deletes. **ignore the 674wtq number; dont know where that came from. All of the gains were above 5k rpm. I would say my findings backup MSIXCARBON's results: There IS a noticeable gain over the OEM setup. Before anyone asks about 60-130, etc., believe me, I WISH there was a secluded road for me to do those type of runs nearby; I dont feel comfortable about doing that on CA freeways where I live. The red line on today's dyno graph was my highest numbers from the baseline runs a few weeks ago. I asked EAS to put it on the same graph for comparison. |

If you are in SoCal let me borrow your set the next time I go to the dyno. Will do an immediate before/after. I can control heat soak as well so it will be a reasonable comparison

That would be some numbers I'd like to see. And I'm ok with that, but my kids and their activities trump everything else (even work sometimes )....it would have to be planned out. It took almost 3 hrs to install these intakes....2.5 hrs for the passenger side and about 20 min for the driver side, lol. But having gone through it, I could probably crank it out in less than an hour now after figuring some things out. |

Honestly, you wont hear this intake in-cabin, especially if you have an aftermarket exhaust and/or a tune thats running full 22psi boost; you'll hear the turbos first, or exhaust. I can sorta hear the intakes when the windows are down, but barely under the other sounds mentioned. Plus, you only hear that induction sound in the mid rpm range. I'd get the RK intakes for the performance factor, especially if you have an OEM intake setup. You may gain up to 40whp on the dyno, or more at speed. |
