DIY: Disable BMW Active Sound Design (ASD) without affecting audio/radio system

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
Hi folks. Finally I was able to disable ASD by just unplugging the ASD connector cable from the ASD Sound Module. It takes about One hour and there are no impacts/errors. I have a Hamann exhaust installed and ist sounds really great. Hence I dont need any fake sound in the cabin. It's way too loud with ASD

Here is how:

Turn down the back seat. You have to remove the covers on the floor (the big one) and the left one. You also have to lift the rubber seal a little beat so that you can remove the backplane.

Almost everything is fixed with press buttons which you can remove safely. Finally you can use them again to put everything together.

After you remove the left cover you have access to the ASD module. Just unplug the connector and fix it with a cable strap.

We're currently working on a switch/button to enable/disable ASD from the rear trunk

ASD with the original exhust is fine. But with the Hamann it's that loud that it isn't fun anymore! However I think BMW should make this feature configurable in the iDRIVE.

I too have just had my Active Sound Module disconnected by the stereo shop which is just completing an over-the-top sound system for me (i.e. I wasn't 100% satisfied with the B&O I ordered). Secondarily, with my M Performance (Akrapovic) exhaust, I thought it wise for both these reasons to do away with Active Exhaust Sound, etc.

For details let me know.

Is the audio (CD/radio) still working with the ASD disconnected?
Mine is M135i which also has ASD.

Yes. The cable is for ASD only. No impact to Radio!

Great for someone who has the equipment (cable, software) and of course know-how. the craftsman may prefer the "manual" option 😁

So, how does your car sound now from the cabin ? Is it still too silent ? Does it sound better than with ASD enabled ?

You should talk to @pillpusher84
He sells quality cables cheaply on ebay, well versed in coding, and very easy to work with to code whatever you need. He can even work remotely!

Very cool. Now hopefully these "purists" can shut up about this system.

Thank you!

I refused to buy a car with fake engine sound....if this works, you might have just put BMW back on my shopping list. I still have a problem with BMW not letting you turn it off in the first place or developing better sound dynamics with the exhaust system but this is great news!

So unbelievably lame that you even have to do this mod to a BMW! But at least you can shut that shit off!

I'm not sure why you have a problem with this. There is a microphone in driveline and speakers in the car. Do you also refuse to listen to public speakers who talk on a microphone? I could understand if it was "better live" but it's not. BMW does this so they can isolate the cabin from annoying vibration and road sound better while allowing the driver to hear the engine.

I do understand that the modders my want to turn it off but HELL I would love to add this to my e90 Performance Edition. I love the sound in the M235 but don't want to bother the neighbors with a loud exhaust.

I wonder if it possible to ADD it to current tech package. I looks like it may just be an additional source to the Sound system that is on at all times?
