Have you ever driven an E39 M5 or 540i sport. or E60 M5 or 550i in manual? They're freakin awesome!!!. 6MT plus big engines= alot of fun. Yes they're big cars but man is it fun . The only people "lunging" around were the ones driving SMG

Totally agree, my buddy has a e39 M5 and it's a blast to drive and far easier to be smooth with the manual than the SMG on my M6.

Also if I remember right, during the M5 introduction when the BMWUSA CEO was asked about the ride he just did on the M5 DCT, he commented that he preferred the ride/handling of an M5 6speed MT than that of the DCT.

That was probably Matt Russell, who is the M Brand Manager for BMWNA. He's apparently put 3,000+ miles on a 6MT M5 using it as a DD for a while now and says that even though he'd pick DCT on the track, he prefers the feel of 6MT for the road.

Agreed but after Road and Track said they also preferred the 6MT and that the although the DCT made the car shift faster, it didn't wholly transform the car, i decided to go with stick. I hope they weren't lying lol

Where did Road and Track say that? They didn't say it in the CTS-V comparison article. Was there some other article where they said this?

Thanks. Yes, they had the "if you really want to drive the car and enjoy driving it, manual is the only way to go" statement there. It's the typical US auto magazine boilerplate language on manual transmission which comes with no explanation or elaboration. I see it less and less these days, but once in a while someone still feels compelled to insert this boilerplate. I personally don't take an unsupported statement like this seriously. There has to be a real comparison and explanation for me to take it seriously.

I guess. Not sure how much more real the comparison could be given it's all about feel and entirely subjective. If you were referring to numbers, their data panel pdf shows the differences in 0-60 but we already know which is faster.

It seems that there are people who through their postings are always antagonistic toward those who prefer a Manual Transmission M5 to a DCT and dismissing any comments even by an auto magazine's preference of a manual than a DCT -- one does not have to elaborate ones preference as one knows what he/she prefers when he/she drives a car using that transmission. This is the same opinion that was espoused by the BMWNA M manager as he has driven both transmissions. In fact some believe that the M5 DCT is over hyped and may actually be inferior to comparable transmissions from Audi or MB (Don't flame me as this is what is voiced by some in Audi and MB forums).

The question asked by the original poster was a simple objective question

The responses were inevitably subjective. The question of which is better is a stupid question to ask.

It should be explainable even if it's subjective. For example, I can explain why I liked my manual transmission Nissan Maxima better than my automatic Nissan Maxima (owned both), or why I liked the automatic Infiniti G37 better than the manual one (also owned both). If the guy in the video can't say a single word to explain his statement, then I have to assume it's boilerplate.

It's really personal preference. Both transmissions will do the job and I'm certain highly capable. I have enjoyed manuals in the past and also a double clutch (PDK) in my Panamera. The PDK is an unbelievably fast shifting transmission. For me, I chose the DCT due to my commute and don't want to be shifting or holding down a clutch.

So what's your explanation as to why you like your 6mt maxima better? . The RT guy just said, although the dct is an awesome automatic, they'd just prefer shifting their own gears. I'm assuming your explanation will be pretty close to theirs . As others said, if you take out 0-60, it's personal preference so there is no right or wrong. Cars are eventually going to all be hybrid/electric, drive and park themselves and the difference between taking the bus and driving yourself will almost be nonexistent. My prius already does two out of the three. sigh

I love manual transmissions. Love to row my own gears, but in todays day and age and especially for the F10M5 i never even considered the manual. DCT all the way and don't look back. I had 2 e60's with smg, loved it. The DCT is a dramatic improvement too.
