My F10 M5 18,000 mile service update - Front Wheel Clicking Issue Update - Pix Inside

Greetings fellow F10 M5 owners.

The time had come to do some independent sevicing on my F10 M5 because I am a good ///M car owner. I took my M5 to a local BMW Indy Shop and got the following done:

1. Engine Oil Change
2. Brake Fluid Change - Installed ATe Super Blue (Amber) Racing Brake Fluid.

It had been about 6,000 miles since my last oil change at the dealership and they had set my intervals to 12,000 miles so I figured it was time for a change. The oil change went fine and my Indy Tech hugged me for being extra vigilant for changing the oil more frequently.

I had been meaning to change my brake fluid to ATe Super Blue but had never gotten around to it until now. I'm hoping that I'll have a little less brake fade when roaring down the mountain in the future. I installed the same stuff in my E60 M5 and the difference was literally night and day. I never had an issue with brake fade on my E60 M5.

While my M5 was on the lift, it was the first time in a while that I have gotten to inspect my tires for how they are holding up. I already have an appointment to get new tires next week, but my current tires are still my original factory tires and now have 18,000 miles on them including the 2,000 miles I drove on Euro Delivery and even on the Nurburgring with. As you can see from the pictures the tires have held up extremely well. I have never had an alignment and I am still running stock suspension. You can see how both the front and rear tires have worn perfectly evenly. This is a sign of a perfect alignment. You can also see how much tread I have left which is quite amazing for 18,000 miles of hard canyon carving about 2 times a month and just a lot of driving in general. My Indy Mechanic said that they needed to be changed, but I still have about 1,000 miles left on them easy. Like I have said before these Michelin Pilot Super Sports are the real deal. Look how long they've lasted with hard driving. I'm amazed by these tires.

Well when my Indy Mechanic took my wheels off to do the Brake Fluid change, I took the opportunity to snap some quick photos with the iPhone5 of my wheel hubs and brake rotors. I told him about the known and virulent issue with the front wheels making a clicking sound on the F10 M5. He knew about the bulletin that BMW had released a while back and therefore knew what I was talking about. I would like all of you to take notes and notice how there are hot spots on my brake rotors. THIS is how the M5 is supposed to be driven! LOL! Anyways, concerning the issue of the clicking noise from the front wheels, take a look at my front wheel hubs and then take a look at my rear ones. When I brought my M5 in to the shop today I was getting A LOT of clicking from the front wheels. You can tell that the front hubs are WAY dirtier than the rear ones. He cleaned my hubs and applied some sort of degreaser which said may help with the dirt getting in between the hub and the knuckle on the wheel. When I left, I had absolutely no clicking any more. Keep in mind that I already had the dealership clean my wheels once already and the clicking came back in just a few mountain drives later. So this is the second time I've had to clean the wheels for the clicking issue. This time however, I am remembering at what milage I cleaned them at so I can get a milage count to when it comes back. Maybe I can get an estimate as to how many miles we should get the wheels cleaned in order to avoid the clicking noise.

Well that's about it. Hope that I have helped in some way and hope that you continue to enjoy your Ultimate Driving Machine.

Oh yeah the last shot, I just snapped real quick with the iPhone5 also. I thought my M5 looked badass sitting there next to the shop after the servicing got done.

Dave, just curious how the wheel cleaning helps with the clicking. I haven't heard any clicking on the car yet and not looking forward to it.

Then you could drive your M5 year-round, even through those harsh San Diego winters

Garage List
Yeah... Had a couple of back yard drifting sessions and coming hard into the tread markers at just 15,000 milos. Interesting what these tires could do with just DD action. ....hey Dave, what do you think about "framing" one of these tires in the garage to reminisce the F10 euro delivery?? ;D I'm considering it.

Do you know what the SIB is for the wheel clicking? My dealer just keeps replacing my wheel hubs.. They don't last long.

I posted it in another thread somewhere. I forgot what it was called though.

Just curious, why are you replacing your tires now? It seems you have plenty of tread depth left. Why not wait until you hit the wear bars at least?

Actually I'll end up putting a couple of more thousand miles on them. I won't be able to get new tires on until next week now due to scheduling issues. It's all good.
