31 2 220

The manual claims I need a BMW special tool 31 2 220 to remove the exhaust.
What the hell is this? I cannot find it anywhere online.

Go to the M6 board and PM member STARCHILD (Tim). He will know 100000% for sure. It is probably a cutting tool or simple wrench in BMW code. In any case, he can tell you exactly what you need.

Thanks Coldlist. Any clue if we have a good jack up point in the front of our car?

You don't need special tools to take the exhaust off. Thats a crock of skeet. I remove mine And replaced it in about 2 1/2 to 3 hours. Super easy job. Of course I spent most of the time horse playing. Use a lift. Use the 4 points Bmw provided.

This is my post from January of this year:

I forgot to post my experience with the floor jack and hope that this will help those home mechanics who are as timid as I was at first. For the front, the raised dome of aluminum right in front of the oil pan is a sturdy place for the floor jack and has good balance through the lift. My car is still at stock height and even with that I had to lift the car slightly from the side initially to allow the floor jack to travel far enough under the car to place the lift pad in the right place. For the rear I used a folded towel on the jack pad to cushion and add some anti-slip for use on the finned portion of the differential. It was solid and the fins handled the weight with no problem. I was just nervous with a new car, but it is a simple process when done with care.

FYI-According to Tim (who says he's too busy making money to post-lol!) the part is for an axle support jig and you don't need this to remove the downpipes. Wow! Tim added value here!

Thank you for your opinion, could you please explain why you feel that way? We are here to learn and that would be helpful.

There are 4 points on the car and you can see them in black when you look under the car behind front wheel and in front of rear wheels.. I placed a small piece of wood that fit into those squares when I placed the lift at those points. Personally I wouldn't use a jack, but that is just me. If you were able to use a lift, you can appreciate how they made this car and what it really takes to remove/install your new exhaust properly. Not saying not to use jacks, it's just not the safest way to do this and you really don't have the proper anmount of space. Just my opinion. On another note, your local shop shouldn't charge you alot mof money for an install.
