Noise from Transmission

Hi everyone,

The car automatically selects Park when I switch off the engine with the transmission in Drive. After 5-6 seconds there is a loud squeak. It's reproducible. My routine is apply park brake, leave in Drive and switch off engine.
Any ideas what this noise could be?

I think it is the exhaust valve closing. This may have been discussed previously on other threads. I notice it each time I turn the car off in the garage anyway.

Of course maybe you aren't talking about that noise.

There is a noise, but I wouldn't call it a loud squeak.
It's the parking brake.. but I hear it about 2 seconds after engaging it.

Do you hear the parking break, and then another noise?

Yes I hear the whirring of the parking brake. After the car is turned off and "P" automatically engaged there is a loud squeak. It's not the same as the park brake.

various thoughts on it

http://f10.m5post.com/forums/showthr...ghlight=squeak

Here is the other thread on it. It's no big deal whatever it is. I only hear it in the garage. Outside I never notice it probably because the background noise is generally higher.

I always put mine in neutral and set parking break. I've never left it in park and turned the car off.

I always turn the car off and hit the stop button again. When you hit the stop button the second time the car goes into park and also shuts off the lights, radio and dash lights. Otherwise that stuff stays on for 30 seconds or so after you close the door. If you lock the car after getting out the same it's the same thing with the lights and radio as hitting the stop button the second time. However, I am not sure what happens regarding the parking brake if you don't hit the stop button the second time. I have been doing this since I owned my 535 but it always went into park automatically on the first shutoff. I did it with that one because of the other things the second button push would shut off.

Hum. Can't say on this one. I just hit neutral brake, button off twice and on my way. Take it in for a look see if you have time.

Mine does not do this. I pull the park brake switch then hit the stop button once while the car is I gear, it goes into park, then I lift my foot off the brake and hit stop again to turn off the electronics.

One of my M5's has it, the other doesn't... Having said that, the one that 'has it' is always parked in the garage, so maybe I can hear it because of acoustics. The 'squeak' is about twice as loud as 'P' brake engagement, it also sounds somewhat similar to brake squeal, but louder. Cars are in different countries so I can't test them next to each other to understand it better
