Talking Racing Helmet SA2010 Advice

I am going to my first track day with the Beast at Buttonwillow on May 16, 2014: http://www.motorsportreg.com/index.c...A#.Uwq3RNGYbre The event requires a helmet rated Snell SA2005 or SA2010. For those who have extensive track experience, do you have any advice on what type of helmet to purchase since this will undoubtedly be the first of many track days for me? Should I get open face or a full helmet? Thanks in advance.

Well, for starters, definitely get the SA2010. It will be an approved helmet for a much longer time.

As for open vs. closed, that is a personal preference. Open is much easier to communicate from in the car.

When I was instructing with the BMW CCA I used (and still have) a Bell M3 closed face helmet. I wanted the closed face because I would, from time to time, instruct in convertibles. I wired my helmet with a Chatterbox communication set up. Even if you do go with an open face, it is still going to be a little tough to talk with out yelling (when at speed). Also, I liked being able to change the visor between tinted and clear depending on the conditions.

Most importantly, you really need to try on as many options as possible. They all have a different fit and feel. Make sure you go to a good shop so that they can make sure the helmet isn't too big or too small.

Remember, don't go cheap on your helmet. It's not the place to try and save money. You may never be in a situation where it matters, but if you ever are, you're going to want the best protection possible.

BMW CCA has helmets for rent. I would just do that for your first track day, unless you think you will be doing more.

Bell makes good closed face helmets for reasonable (~$400), but agree to try them on. Each manufacturer fits differently.

Maybe I'll have to try and get out there for that date as well. Have been wanting to hit buttonwillow.

Chuckwalla March 8-9 if you want to join. Awesome track. Was the first place I ever drove on circuit and that was with my M5.

Thanks for the info. Maybe since this will be my first track event, I will rent the helmet and take it from there. I was half-way done with the San Diego HPDE when I looked at my calendar and I noticed that I will be in Napa on March 28-30. Too bad since I would have definitely jumped on that event. Hoop, let me know if you are going to Buttonwillow.
