Every time there is a comparison involving an E39 it just reinforces that it was the most perfect car ever made.

I loved the sound my old s65 + tubi exhaust made, it was madness! But we cannot expect todays turbos to sound anything like as good as the s85/65 as we have no induction roar only exhaust the last gen gave you both + another 1200rpm so it's no contest.

The F10 M5 sounds pretty good with mods and in isolation. But it can't hold a candle to the S62 and S85.

I'm sure the S85 sounds fantastic with an RPi GT exhaust, but I really hate it when companies produce videos with so much bullshit audio post-production work for a product like an exhaust. How the hell are we supposed to tell what the exhaust actually sounds like with that constant drone in the background and more reverb than a death metal concert?

Here is a video clip of my E60 M5 with RPi GT exhaust and de-cat headers (cats cut off and proper sized piping welded in, same concept as RPi GT headers). I didn't gut out the cats like a lot of people to do for a half ass gain in performance.
Skip to 3:40 & 7:25 for WOT. No fancy post production processing just straight auto recording from external mic on rear of car. |

I love the V10, but so far the best Exhaust brand and affordable was Eisenmann IMO,
my Club Member got Kreisseig Exhuast msrp 9k and i think it was Far Blown every v10 door with the sound alone.Marker 1:50 start the pulls. |

Sorry, didn't mean to direct that rant at you. I just like my engine sounds unadulterated

In this video, IMO the e39 sounds the best.
In general (comparing stock or equally well done aftermarket), I'd rate the exhaust notes as.... e60 > e34 > e28 > e39 > f10 All of the M5's are decently good, though, unlike the non s65 M3's. M3's need intake noise to sound glorious I kind of want to put cutouts on my e39. No desire for that loud 99% of the time, but it would be fun to have that (or more) at the press of a button. Quote:
But, yeah-- s85 just shares cylinder configuration with their contemporary F1 cars. The S14/s38 are clearly, by a HUGE margin, the most F1 related M engines.
