Yup
Never been scared to push a car to its limits as with this,
It is violent and will spin all wheels at times!!!
I am afraid that ZF Stock tranny won’t take that much

By the way DCT is tons better than ZF and I do miss it much more accurate and fun, and I haven’t tuned my M5/6 so cant speak to power but Tuned S8 is simply insane !! Hooligan

The ZF can handle much more than any DCT and thats partially why Audi choose it with their high tq ratings. Its the right transmission for AWD and does a rather good job compared to better engineered trannys like the DCT but with the proper software the ZF is fine.

you have the same as this with the 900 lb/ft being the max for gas engines and 1000 for diesel...

If you think about, you have a much more usable car for daily use; from a dig and in adverse weather. Plus with your mods the response of the ZF is strong and the car is just so aggressive.

Not sure I would say “heavy” especially I would say I As uninitiated in the world of modding can’t be the jury on that!

But it smells period and certainly not fun to around it or have it running and do anything around the car anymore

Anybody knows whether APR High flow in particular are worse than other HFC?!

True but a good source for Audi information; I owned an S6 and learned quite a bit over there.

100% agree--- just not enough Audi S and RS owners here to really chime in. I can give basic info/intel but there are some savvy peeps there too in regards to their cars.

How do you guys like the zf transmisson? I was thinking of getting the s8 or rs7 before getting another M5 but the transmission really was a deal breaker for me.

It reminded me sort of the AMG MCT transmission. Not as bad but not too good. Is there any tune for it?

Really nice cars though and awesome pickup congrats.

I can tell you and I know many people won’t agree with me it’s the worst thing about my S8 for sure, fast but lethargic and I believe the issue stems from being GEARED (No pun intended) towards smooth ride being Luxury but it’s a head scratcher being the chosen one for RS7 too!!

From ownership with tuned cars and the 8 speed ZF:

1. RS7
2. Bentley GT3R
3. Jag F Type R

The transmission in itself from a mechanical view is fine, it can handle much more tq than a DCT and for all intensive daily driving and street usage; its fast and fluid. I have heard that the F90 boys are saying the same thing. Ill say this, a tune on these cars helps the movement as the boost comes on faster and any discerning feel of "sluggishness" really isnt there any more.

Whats also very import is how the electronics are mated up with the hardware. TCU programming is key. The RS7 and Bentley both had a good relationship here and Im sure the F90 too. The Jag was more of a struggle with some realistic lag but its exhaust made up for those annoyances

If we line up a DCT car with all other things being equal, it will out pull a ZF car but its not going to be so dramatic and once you get into the mod world the ZF is a much safer/stronger transmission to play with.

I have had 5 MCT Benz cars plus the new 9 speed version in my E63S (2018) and its clearly advanced and I feel again, alot has to do with the software in the TCU. The clunckiness is gone and the shifts are seamless. There are days when I drive one of my DCT cars (R8/GTS/991 GTS) and then get in the E63S and dont even notice the difference. Its a very intuitive tranny IMHO.

Learning here
Really!
Call me ignorant or dramatic, but FEIW I still don’t like how it’s too soft feeling and can’t get that instantaneous kick in my back with every upshift or downshift I make at will with the paddles!! But without paddles maybe a contest!!
Again I maybe too subjective as I know I don’t have your experience with the aforementioned fleet man LOL, but to me DCT wins hands down when it comes to feeling sporty while driving just like exhaust sound when it might not necessarily mean it is a faster car!!

Keywords here: paddles and electronics.

I NEVER found the ZF to be great with the electronics and my Audi cars/Bentley (basically same engine) in regards to paddle shifting. The response time is just a bit too long. Thats why these cars make more sense in Drive-S (not just Drive but Drive with the S mode) which is done by putting the car in D and then pulling it back towards the trunk one more click. The Sport mode in Drive is aggressive from not only shifting but holding the rpms up. If you are paddle shifting there will be driver error and other conditions that hold you back. So in that regard of course the DCT is the better transmission. My PDK's in the Porsche are hyper aggressive in shift modes and my 991.1 GT3 was absolutely the most ferocious in shifting with the PDK Plus.

I would always opt for a PDK/DCT but the ZF is liveable without a doubt.

Isn't MCT another word for DCT? Our E63Ss have a wet clutch instead of a torque converters like the ZF.

I really like the 9-speed AMG MCT. It's not as good as the latest Porsche 8-speed PDK, but it's way better than any ZF 8-speed transmission I had in some of my previous cars.

The MCT is still a planetary automatic while the DCT is a true pedal (clutch) free manual.

This explains it better:

Quote:
The Speedshift MCT transmission from AMG is not a dual-clutch unit either. At this point, some of you are presumably wondering what kind of sorcery drives the cars that come with the AMG Speedshift MCT gearbox. Jeremy Clarkson might reply that black magic is involved, but we like to call it engineering.

In other words, the Speedshift MCT unit from Mercedes-AMG, is a multi-clutch automatic gearbox. Instead of a torque converter, like conventional automatics, it possesses a “clutch pack,” which includes multiple clutches placed together and controlled separately. It is easily differentiated from dual-clutch automatics because it has a single input shaft

I had a 15 S8, traded in my M5 for it. That was one of my favorites! Good luck with it and enjoy!
