Agreed, I never understand the hate for manuals on this car.
I test drove both the auto & manual version. Although I will agree the automatic transmission is fantastic in this car, like nothing I have driven before. But I just couldn't imagine ever choosing it over the 6 speed. After driving the car for a few months it's like second nature, so comfortable to drive. When I want to step on it rowing through gears is way more satisfying. Who cares if the auto is faster, I already have 5 speeding tickets with this car.... I don't need faster lol. |

Apples and oranges
I fretted quite a bit about ordering the 6 speed vs. the DCT. Taking delivery on Friday. I chose the DCT. Just seemed right in this car. To each his own - but - it really isn't surprising they are dropping it moving forward. Old tech.

In the end, I see two things that dictates the demise of the manual for the next M5/M6:
1) Economics -The manual was only offered for US and Canada markets. That's only two territories out of the more than 100 markets that BMW sells this car. -Within the USA and Canada, what is the percentage of manual cars amongst the entire M5/M6 population in North America? I read that the take rates for manual M5 F10 were something like 20 percent at best. Then for the M6, it was something like single digits. Heck, there was only one single M6 GC that came with a stick. -At the end of the day, as much as you want to please enthusiasts, BMW is first and foremost a business and the main purpose of any business is to make money. -The business case for an M5/M6 manual ended when so few people bought them. 2) The manual stick was an after thought -Many forumers here on Bimmerpost have commented on the same thing. This car was designed primarily with DCT in mind........and the stick shift that BMW used was just from the 550i parts bin. -Users reported that turbo lag was more evident in the stick compared to the DCT -I think there was a Motor Trend review that said the same thing. So there, the only options are: A) Keep your manual M5/M6 B) Only consider M2/M3/M4 for future BMW stick shift C) Look elsewhere |

The F90 M5 will be 600HP and AWD. Manual, AWD, and high power engines are not good combos, very difficult to lay power to the ground without breaking parts. Let's face it, there's only a very small population who would prefer a manual over the quicker DCT. Within that manual population, there's even a smaller percentage who even know how to properly heel and toe.
I drove manual for many years. I can heel and toe very well, but would take a DCT over a manual M5 (a luxury sport sedan). If it's a 911 or M2/M3/M4, that's another story.
