What is your BMI Index?

I'm trying to lose a few pounds, so I went to my trainer & had my BMI Index calculated (so we can compare it to my results later).

According to his equipment, I'm at 17.3. I filled out an online one, and it came back at 26.9 kg/m^2.

My trainer has pretty pleased with the 17.3, but we've set a goal of 13 by the end of april.

So, how does this compare to you guys?

~24 consistently. BMI is misleading though because it can calculate you as being overweight if you're muscular.

I thought that might be true. I work out quite a bit, I've got good sized shoulders/back/arms/legs, and am pretty lean. I know I could use to lose a few pounds of fat, but I don't think most people would consider me overweight.

I got my body fat % tested by some students that needed to do so for their exercise science degrees and I came back 3-3.% body fat every time. When I just used an online tool and typed in my height/ weight (6'2" 170) it told me 21%. Obviously using calipers/ underwater weighing is much, much more accurate.

BMI does factor in height.. but yes, it's pretty useless. It really only works OK for women and scrawny men.

There is some confusion about the BMI...almost impossible to get at 13 in an healthy manner.

At 5'10", I should be between 123 and 174lbs (18.5 and 25). I aim at 153.5lbs, I'll be 85lbs lighter than the maximum I weighted, and at a BMI of 22 or so.

BMI DOES work for the majority of people, we're just such a fat nation we say "That's rediculous it can't work! I'm healthy even if my BMI is 30!". The only place the MBI doesn't work is folks who have very low fat reserves but very large muscles (aka ripped). If you don't have a 6 pack, you still have too much fat to be claiming muscle. I've put on 22 lbs of muscle before and still been at 25.2 BMI. If you think BMI is crap, then you need to lose weight.

I think we found the scrawny/nerdy guy. BMI couldn't be more idiotic. I'm in good shape, run/bike/lift 4 to 5 times a week and have consistently measured at 10% body fat via various methods. I can scuba dive basically without or with very minimal additional weight.

Several years ago, I worked out for 3 hours a day for six months and ran a half marathon in an hour and a half. I had like 3% or 4% bodyfat and weighed 182lbs.

I weigh 195lbs and am 5'11". According to the midpoint of the BMI (22), I should be 157lbs.

In other words, the BMI says I should have NEGATIVE 10% body fat. It couldn't possibly be less worthwhile and is completely irrelevant for any man with the slightest bit of muscle.

It works wonderfully if you are scrawny and can bench press the bar and squat a small watermelon.

Well, since it seems that BMI is bunk, what is a good measure?

BTW, when my trainer took mine, he used some gizmo that ran an electrical current through me, measuring resistance. I would assume that this device can account for muscle mass vs fatty mass.

People are right about BMI not being totally accurate. Some people have heavier bones or a lot of muscle.(muscle weighs more then fat)
