Question Where does the 3'er, 4'er, 2'er come from?

Basically yes, not really a substitute, but constraint of the language if said with "series".
Comes from zweier (2), dreier (3), vierer (4) etc.

Series is in this case "(Bau-)reihe" in german, so its comes from 'BMW 3er Reihe', as you can't say just "Drei Reihe" in german, 'er' has to be put behind the number.
Nowadays its just 'Dreier BMW' and its clear for everyone whats meant

A manual transmission can be set to "comfort", "sport", and "track" modes simply by the technique and speed at which you shift it; it doesn't need "modes", modes are for manumatics that try to behave like a real 3-pedal manual transmission. If you can money-shift it, it's a manual transmission. "Yeah, but NO ONE puts an automatic trans shift knob on a manual transmission."
