autobahn during break in?
On my euro delivery I know I'll be tempted to play on the autobahn, I'm sure the rest of you will have similar temptations, a few questions with regards to break in:
1. what are the repercussions of ignoring the instructions? 2. warranty implication with a problem? 3. any accelerated wear in that can be done? I know porsche runs their engines hard before installing in the chassis, what's bmw's procedure? 4. if still choosing to be more aggressive with the car does this affect long term power production? 5. anybody outside the states out there not follow break in and have any issues? Thanks in advance! |

Drive it like ya own it! I went over the 4500rpm a couple times! Like u said the engines are ran hard before they are installed its more the trans and rear end that I would be worried about!

According to my dealer everything is logged during break in, so I stuck to it. I don't want to have any discussions with BMW should the engine fail. I have now covered a total of 3,000 miles and haven't used a drop of oil. That in itself is worth proper breaking in. I understood quite a few members burn oil.

Plan your route according to the break-in schedule. For my M3 I mapped out 1,200 miles through areas where I wouldn't be able to go that fast, then I had it serviced, then I gradually opened it up. I couldn't leave Germany without hitting the 155 mph limit. And I redlined 4th gear along the way.

Merlosso has a good idea- also I was wondering and I'm sure one of you guys can answer this, can you remove the limiter during euro delievery? 186 on a delimited autobahn sounds pretty tempting to me

I'm bringing my computer and cat5->OBDII cable on my ED trip. There's no way I'm going to be driving a new M5 in the one place on the planet with beautiful highways and unrestricted speeds, and then be limited to a paltry 155mph.

warm up engine to operating temp. enjoy. vary rpm's. don't stomp on gas. roll on. break in your engine as you would normally expect to drive it. after 3 new M cars I haven't had trouble with any of them. ps. guess how many km's are on M5 ring taxis before they take their first paying customers….
