Has anyone noticed a whine that sounds like a power steering pump low on fluid like whine when the engine is cold? It whines with the speed of the engine for me much more pronounced when cold. My power steering fluid is normal height. The only other pump I can think of is the turbo coolant line pump? Is that electric? Does it speed up with the speed of the engine? Any other ideas?

It is a manual transmission and happens in or out of gear, just engine related.

It's an engine noise, mine does the exact same with the auxiliary belt off.

It's the cold start enrichment, wait 'till it goes off and a few minutes warm up nothing to worry about, can't really hear a whine that much in mine tho.

If you think it is powersteering, it can't hurt to flush the fluid. I had some cold engine powersteering noise that got reduced a little by fully flushing the system with CH11S.

These cars/engines do typically make some light whining noise, especially when cold. It's pretty much normal but hard for us to diagnosis over the internet.

I appreciate the replies. It is definitely louder when the engine is cold but it doesn’t completely go away when warm. Now that the weather is getting better I will get my ears under the hood and if I find anything I’ll let everyone know. I now see there is an older thread on it but no good conclusions yet.

I've heard many of them doing it. It's not power steering. Seems to be an engine whine. I foolishly assumed it was my power steering pump and replaced it without checking.

I wonder if it is one of the auxiliary coolant pumps.

I'm going to try this bleeding procedure to give a listen to the pumps.

Coolant pump doesn't really make a sound. Some engines just have a characteristic whine, the s63 appears to have one also.

A follow up on this, I did the procedure for the electric coolant pumps that cool the ecu's and charge air boxes and they were quiet enough that I didn't realize the procedure worked while sitting in the car. They were definitely not the whine, lol, just a nice fairly quiet whir that you would expect from an electric motor.
