New M5 Owner - M5 is... Slow?

So I just recently purchased a 2013 M5, 49k miles.

So far I love this car but something seems wrong... it feels pretty sluggish. Like 6.5 s 0-60 slow.

I'm coming from a 535i and I still have both of them. I drove them one after the other and the 535 seems like it pulls MUCH harder.

Judging by the fact everyone who has driven an M5 describes it as "crazy fast" - I'm now wondering if something is going on with it. There are no check engine lights, car drives completely smoothly, and there are no sounds or leaks that I can hear/see.

It almost feels as if the turbos aren't spooling at all or creating any boost. The car revs pretty slowly and if I drop a gear on the highway down and go WOT, the car accellerates pretty slowly.

Whats could be going on here?

I'm thinking about taking the car to get dyno'd. I have an extended warranty through BMW until next year so I should be okay if there is any needed repairs. (knocks on wood)

Race it against your 535 and if you don't blow it away something is wrong with the M5
And let the 535 get the jump and you'll get a feel for how fast the M is

I had everything up there.

I think I may have found the issue. I had the mufflers deleted and straight pipe installed and I don't think the shop properly capped the vacuum lines. Apparently, these are powered by the turbo and if they are open then you are losing boost and its noticeably sluggish... This fits all the boxes.

I'm going to properly plug these tomorrow and check back.

Fingers crossed this is the issue!

Get them capped off and be ready to hold on tight. The M5 Is a monster. I came from a tuned 535d which was by no means slow and the M5 is a whole different story.

What do you guys/shop use to cap it off properly? I'm thinking about going the muffler delete route as well. I've heard golf tee's but not sure about that.

I've never capped mine off on the m5 but done plenty of vacuum lines in the past. A golf tee would be perfect but I usually use a bolt as I have hundreds.

I had a tuned 335 and when I got the M5 I had the feeling the 335 was slow. The car should feel faster even in comfort mode

You can use a screw for each line. Most muffler by pass companies send a little plug for the hoses.

Alright so the lines were definitely unplugged and just left hanging. I used vaccuum cap tubes from Autozone, with a little bit of silicon sealant and then zip tied them off for extra security.

The car is definitely much faster but I'm still not convinced its 100%. This could be due to the fact the PSS's in the back are on the way out and any pulls from under 60 completely spin the tires and DSC kicks in (or I just need a driver mod ). It IS my first time driving anything over 400 HP.

Here's a video of a 60 (65?) pull at WOT. Sorry its such a short video but its what I could considering the road I was on.

bro..
if you go from a 535 and then into an m5 and it doesnt blow it away without any thought, you have a turbo out or something.

also, you cant floor it and take off if you are not on warm michelin 4s tires and have it in mdm or no dsc at all. if traction control is on, its gonna intrude and kill power.

i drive mine in comfort and s1 auto and s2 manual on the regular and it throws my head into the headrests all the time and i smoke everything that i can coax into running me but most people are afraid of embarrassment.

-not talking crap, but if you had gone the right route and gotten a soul muffler bypass system, they come with surgical grade vacuum plugs and put it in the install pamphlet.
plugging the lines is a crucial and well known and talked about part of getting an aftermarket exhaust on our cars

BUT, i think you have a turbo out bc i went from a dinan tuned f10 550 to the m5 and its not even a comparison and I guarantee you my 550 was faster than any 535

Yeah that was my thought too coming from a 535 (I was running stage 1 BM3 but still). I drove them back to back with my gf and we both agreed it felt like my 535 was making more torque on the butt Dyno.

With everything set to S3, it just doesn't slam me back into my seat like my 535 would. On the top end it is very easily felt, 60-100 feels way faster than my 535. But I don't think i would beat my 535 off the line right now, even if i feather the throttle so DSC doesn't kick in. This is why i thought something may be wrong.

If a turbo was out, wouldn't it be throwing a code?

Do a roll race with your wife in the 535 from 40mph
Let her get the jump and you will see how much faster your car is. Half of the fastness is the suspension set up and how the springs are stiffer and suspension in total. Just do a roll race so you can know for sure. Watching your speedo it looked normal to me

nah, suspension has no bearing on its speed. and actually, having suspension on comfort will yield a faster launch and faster quarter-mile time... this is information via a guy on here that drags his all the time and that has been his discovery.

- if you and your girl dont feel like its pulling like a train, something's up.

but i never get on it out the hole unless in mdm.. its impossible wuth dsc fully on

so put it in MDM, drive 20 miles and get warm tires and if you dont feel the pull of 500 lb ft when u get on it u got a problem

ps: my 550 was stage 2 dinan

Just went out, warmed it up and the tires with some burn outs and got some seriously decent pulls out of it. 0-60 seems like its in the mid 4's from a 2-3 mph roll... I think my tires are seriously holding me back under 40 mph. I have Pilot Sport Cup 2's on the way for rears.

My girlfriend won't agree to race me, go figure lol.

I'm going to try to get on a dyno this week to settle it, because even if there was a problem I think BMW would tell me to pack sand considering there are no codes or lights without at least some hard numbers to back it up?

Honestly it feels like a NA 4.4L V8 to me. I've never driven another M5 so I have nothing to compare to., is there much turbo lag or anything? What is the power band?

Put throttle in sport plus, gear change manual and in the highest setting. Sit at 3k in 3rd on a good bit of road, flick to 2nd and plant it. If it doesn't tear your face off then something is wrong. Needs to be in MDM aswell, especially with PSS tyres.

michelin pilot sport 4s is the tire you want. toyo r888 are stickier but no wet trac and supposedly will break our diffs from hooking so hard
