Unless you are in germany (autobahn) or track the vehicle once per week, The dinan stage 4 550 is a pretty impressive substitute for $ 20,000 to $ 25,000.00 less. Dinan stage 4 550 0-60 in 4.3 seconds and the 1/4 mile in 12.3. Not bad for a poor mans M5.
It still wont stop, handle, or look like an M5. You also cant get the performance as far. A M5 with a tune is nasty. I almost bought a 550i and drove a full stage 4 Dinan tuned dealer car. It was an awesome car don't get me wrong but it just didn't have a sports car feel. (Soft Suspension - Transmission Shifts - Throttle Mapping) 1/4 mile means very little in the big picture. I know you can mod the crap out of a 550i to get the same performance but you are going to spend a ton.

Suspension
Brakes
LSD
DCT
Wheels
Exhaust
Engine Performance

You don't buy an M car for price hell you don't buy any luxury or sports car for price you buy for the feel. If you want a poor mans M5 buy a CTS V lol

Can't afford anything more expensive than a M5 at this moment, so if there was no M5, I'd be quite happy with a E9X M3 coupe or sedan still.

Speaking of CTS-V. I think they took the transmission from a semi truck. It's a fucking awful car.

anyway, the 991 carrera s was going to be my answer to this thread. still may get one next year.
Plus one just deciding on the color now! 991 is one of the best Porsche's designed performance and handling. Will look nice parked next to the M5!

Hi ,
Its not the rubber door seals themselves you need to be looking at, but the felt strip, on the very top edges of the seals. They rub on the painted surface of the door surrounds. If you get some silicon spray, spray some into a small container, then brush the silicone into the felt strips, you should have no more creaking. Also, polishing the door surrounds, where the felt strips rub against, is a good idea, regards, SIMON.

A brand new 550 is about 70k+ 25k for the dinan upgrades= I should have just bought an M5 at 95k
Where is the logic? And you get alot more perfomance upgrades such as wheels, suspension, brakes, etc............

maybe a Quattroporte. Less performance more money, better looking, more class.

I had a '12 550 before I got my M5. I thought about getting the dinan stuff done to the 550, but after driving the two, the M5 was the clear winner (at least to me). I do agree w/WingedWheel that you can come out cheaper with a dinan 550, but I think the margin is probably a little less than $24k (more like $15K) if you equip the 550 with all of the things you get on the M5. So in the end I see WingedWheel's point, but I also noticed a difference in the two and went with the M5.

With regard to my original post, it seems opinions vary on a suitable stand-in for the F10 M5. After reading some of these posts, I think three really stand out:

- 2014 Audi RS7 - should be here in the states sometime this year and for those of us who can't fit into anything remotely the size of a 911, this would be a good choice.

- 2014 MB E63 AMG- looks like it will be a beast and for those who like AWD & performance, this looks like a solid contender.

- 2013 M6 Coupe - I probably would prefer the M3 Coupe or new M4 Coupe, but I'm tall and my bias won't let me pick any of those small cars.

With regard to the Porsche Panny a lot people referenced, it looks good from the front, but that backside looks like a nice model that you see out on the street and then you see her backside is struggling to hold on only due to a pair of Spanx... The M6 GC looks promising, but headroom, the metal around the windows (I'm sure there is some technical term for it) and cheesy lights kill it for me. Thanks to all who have commented thus far.

Your dreaming a nicely optioned M5 has an MSRP 97k a 550 is about 70k to 80k with no Dinan. To get your 550i fully upgraded with Suspension, LSD, Brakes, Intercooler, Software, Intake, Wheels, Tires, and I could go on. Atleast 25k more like 30k to 35k which puts you over an M5 and it will still be lacking. Who wants the baddest 550i? You. Most people want the M5. You can lie about the numbers to suit your case.

ACTUAL PURCHASE PRICE = $ 70,000.00. + DINAN STAGE 4 AT $ 11,000.00 = $ 81,000.00. I know these numbers because I that's what I actually paid einstein.

A M5 lightly optioned, unless it's used will be $ 97,000.00. A M5 optioned the way most people would want one will be $ 105,000.00 and up msrp. Maybe you can get it new for $ 100,000.00. So your difference would be approximately $ 19,000 to $ 20,000.00. Now start adding up insurance and registration for less torque and 30 more horsepower. Like I said you can do alot with $ 20,000 to $ 25,000.00 dollars. In my opinion x drive cancels out LSD.
What you're forgetting is that every penny you pay for modifications will not only go down the drain on resale, it will probably lower the value.

Your special math. You can get money more off an M5 too. And 97k is well equipped not loaded but has most of what people want.

X Drive does not cancel out the LSD it's not even meant for performance. It's meant from snow. Lol

Stage 4 makes your car go fast in a straight line what about corners? Have you even drove a 550i or M5 at a track?

Stop with your silly math and be honest. Do me a favor and build an M5 and tell me what options I am missing? That an M5 owner would want?

I agree, 2014 Audi RS7 top choice and then 2014 Merc E63 AMG second if the F10 M5 did not exist. Anbody know if they are bringing the 2014 Audi RS6 here to the U.S.? Last I could tell they are not going to bring it here for some weird reason.

Is there something that I am missing about RS7? I don't see it as true competitor to M5 or E63. I am not sure how the Audis are today, but from my previous experience, it was very heavy, not fun to drive at all. (except R8) I really liked the exhaust sound of B7 RS4, but not the current RS series. I never seen the new ones in person.. but I obviously think there is no sound at all in current RS series or S series. (S6, S7, RS6, RS7)

I don't know about you, but I think this sounds pretty good for a 4.0L Twin Turbo V8.

Also I was doing some research and I can't find any evidence of Audi producing a 2014 RS6 Sedan. From what I can tell they are only coming out with a 2014 RS6 Avant. This one baffles me.

RPiM5 is correct & Audi isn't coming out with a RS6, which would be a true competitor for the M5. I picked the RS7 b/c it's got room and it's coming to the states. All of the Audi S models aren't competitors for any M car.

The 2014 E63 looks like a beast, but Mercs just seem like they are trying to hard to be something their not (i.e., trying to be a performance brand when they are really a luxury brand).

See, this is why I couldn't really come up with a real competitor and why I purchased the M5.

audis and mercs do have meaner stock exhaust sounds, so i give them props for that. performance wise, rs7 will be fast from 0-60 for sure. will be overpriced though, as are audi's in general.

Where does it say $95,000 base price? Also you got almost anything an M5 driver would want with the exectutive package for $5,500. You dont have to option the car as much because its premium unlike your car.
