Here we go, noob with the photography here. Thanks in part to some input from you all here, I picked up a new D3100 for my honeymoon last month. This is my first time using an SLR, and I couldn't be happier with the purchase (well, maybe if I had gotten the 7000...). I picked up the 18-105 lense (same as in the kit D90/D7000) as well as a 35mm 1.8f prime. Reading some of the stickeys here and a couple other sites was extremely helpful. I also picked up a book called Understanding Exposure (http://www.amazon.com/Understanding-...dp_ob_title_bk)
from amazon when ordering some other supplies. It's an absolute must for anyone new to manual photography.

In 11 days I took 1,907 pics - the wife was ready to toss me into the volcano in the last picture by the end of the trip. Some of these stretch the definition of "night", but I saw some other sunset/dusk pics on the thread. Anyway, here goes...

The photos are:

(1) Looking towards Diamond Head and Waikiki beach from the Halekulani;
(2) The Four Seasons Lana'i, Manele Bay;
(3) Old Lahaina Luau, Maui;
(4) Ritz Kapaluia, Maui;
(5) Haleakela Crater, Maui; and
(6) one more of the sunset on Waikiki for good measure.

By the way, I am totally clueless on post processing at this point, I'd love any feedback/suggestions as to effects/adjustments that should be made to these. I dont have photoshop (yet) but I did pick up Corel PaintShopPro X3 cheap which I am still getting familiar with.

Nice stuff, in general.

Rule one, straighten horizons, particularly when there's a water/horizon. That's easy to do in PS/Elements and DxO, but I have no clue about Corel. I'd be surprised if that weren't very easy.

Great advice. I had no idea you could do that so easily. That will save a bunch of pictures that were great, but for a severely tilted horizon.

I'm impressed with how sharp you all make your photos. This is the best I got.

if you close of your F stop a little bit more, you'll get a lot more clarity.

I assume you were on a tripod? if so, definitely take advantage of it and close off your F stop to it's highest numerical setting and set the timer and be prepared to wait.

the fuzz you're seeing is your small field of view with you at an F3.5.

also drop your ISO down from 800 to around 1-200.

I agree, that pic above looks like it's been shot at a wide open aperture. For night photos, I shoot f/11 and up. Depends on the look i'm going for. I also increase my EV by 2 clicks (1/3 increments).
