This was a charity auction benefiting the BMW CCA Foundation, specifically its Teen Street Survival Program. The Foundation is very pleased to have the support of people like Mr Hendick, who believes in this cause. As a charity auction, the Foundation receives 100% of the proceeds. Mr Hendrick receives a cool car and a tax deduction for everything over MSRP. It's a win-win! Also, Barrett-Jackson does not take a commission for this auction. In fact, they are the leader in charity auctions. This week Barrett Jackson will hold a dozen charity auctions for very good causes. The Foundation thanks Mr Hendrck, Barrett Jackson, Mr Willisch and all of the people behind the scenes at BMW NA and the BMW CCA Foundation for making this a very successful auction

Go everyone freaking out about the cost. He's worth over 1 billion. But for fun lets do some math:
700000/1000000000 = .0007. If we multiply that by the average Americas wealth of 250000 .0007*250000= 175. So he just spent $175.

Some of the posts in this thread are pathetic.
1. It's his money, he can do what he wants. He earned it by building a successful car and racing empire. 2. He employs thousands of people because he is successful. 3. That money went to a worthy charity, but if he paid that for retail it's still his money. 4. The venom spit at a successful person who is rich in my opinion is sad. He is obviously really good at what he does. I assume the hatred is thinly veiled jealousy. Who would not want to be a billionaire?

It is a lot of money, that M5 isn't worth $700, but if I had that type of $$$, and did it for charity, I wouldn't mind owning this beast. Besides, the guy is a crazy car collector

LOL people actually believe he gives a damn about his tax returns, especially on a "measly" 700k purchase? He made his money, he can do with it as he pleases, , and it's awesome that he regularly gives such large amounts of money to charities in this manner!

That is not accurate at all. He can fully deduct the difference between the amount he paid and the value of what he received. It is not binary.

You guys are going crazy over a $700k purchase of a car valued at $150k.
How about his three $1M purchases of a standard stingray, stingray convertible and Z06. $3M spent on things valued at ~$200k. Of course that was for charity too, which is a good thing, but if you want to say he was dumb for overpaying, the corvettes seem like the ones to whine about.

Did anyone catch the president of BMWNA introduce it? He had no idea what the colour of the car was despite being heavily involved in its development. "It's a dark, metallic silver.. Or matte silver I should say." ... I mean c'mon... You should know to call it Dark Frozen Silver.
Further, he had no idea who the charity reps were standing behind him. "Uhh, they're here to support BMW." Brutal... |
