I learned it on my first e60 M5. I bought that $110k, then in 1 year, with only 3ooo miles on it, it was selling $80k used. Then I bought my used 911. I traded it how much I bought it the next year and added 3000 miles on it. Sedans do not retain good resale value.

But I really look as it this way. If I use this car and make $xx, this is worth it. If it sits in the garage, then it does not make sense. I have other cars to do that.
The main difference is that one is a Porsche with generally higher resale.

I have very little commute (mostly Uber to the airport), so I barely drive and I'd be glad to have an M5 in the garage depreciating.

My philosophy is if you don't have to drive a lot, might as well make the driving you do as enjoyable and engaging as possible, if as you said you have the $$.

Eh....which models? Don't think Porsche is that much better unless you're trying to compare, say, a 911 S/4S with basically no options to an M5 (which really isn't a fair comparison). I did great on most of my BMW's in terms of depreciation (I've owned 4). My TTS did not fair so well.

I'll agree with you on the TTS...simply overpriced from new. But I still think Porsche depreciate less than M cars.

Have never owned one, but Porsche is still my favorite brand. When I don't need back seats anymore, a TT or GT3 will replace the M5.

Oh I loved the car. It actually punches above it's class but given you can pick one up for so cheap two years later really makes it a tough decision to ever consider buying one new.

Stick to a GT3 (if you can get one for around sticker) or an S model with low options and you'll always come out fine. If you start optioning things high, or go to their SUV/sedans you'll get reamed just like the higher end BMWs.

Manheim.

Wholesale may stabilize a bit until spring, but high option cars aren't going to bring a premium. The pull ahead offers were targeted towards specific contracts for cars equipped with the highest uptake rate equipment. The Lease vs Purchase transaction rate for F10 M5's is higher than any car in history with over 80% of them held by BMWFS. If the contract was a Subviened Program, the loss incurred at remarketing after the term is over is insured, but a single entity having that volume of cars to move every month over a 3 year period is not easy. Eventually the market will be over saturated and values will simply nosedive for a period.

Cool, thanks for the info. I'm guessing you need an acct, but looks pretty useful.

I felt dumb cause I recently sold my E46 330Ci which I guess I couldn't accurately gauge the market for.

I kept tack of the VIN and checked it on Google about 2 months later, after it was auctioned off. I saw it being resold by a used car dealer for double the price I had traded it in for!

It's a competition pack car in Singapore Gray with Sandstone leather.
OP - What are you looking to get for the car? I just lost out on a 2014 Comp Package fully loaded with every option except CCBs (which I don't really want) in the exact color combo I want with 12,000 miles on the clock for $63k two nights ago. So pissed I didn't just pull the trigger on that car. If you are looking for a reasonable price, I would step up and maybe we can make a deal.

Uh oh. Looks like we're competing for a 2014 M5. Don't worry, you don't want that one (if it was the I'm thinking about). The 1200 mile service was done at almost 3k. They were going to CPO it for me but I doubt it was CPOable. I also didn't buy it because the salesman I got i didn't like. Let me know if you want to compare notes. I monitor every car for sale like a stalker.
