UPDATE: After reading the story here on Jalopnik, Car and Driver Editor-in-Chief Eddie Alterman commented below, saying: "Well, it's pretty clear we were duped. Hereby acknowledged, and we will run your letter, John. Let me know what else we can do." This story's a good reminder of the importance of allowing derivative works in today's smaller budget media landscape — but to do so with fair crediting of sources.

If it makes you feel any better, your rendering is still much better looking than C&D. They stole the rendering and managed to make it look worse.
Hope everything works out for you.

Glad to hear Car and Driver has acknowledged the issue. I was getting ready to boycott.

This is bad.
Given that CAR AND DRIVER has its logo plastered on YOUR rendering makes C&D responsible. For example, C&D needs to take Mark's check and give it to you because that's the right thing to do. In fact, you would not be wrong by asking them to pay you whatever they paid the cheater because heck, this rendering helps them sell magazines and I think the least they can do i is compensate you for their lack of DD.

As a graphic artist I can say this is really terrible and disgusting, BUT Jon, you are getting tons of great publicity on this on all these big auto blogs so I hope you can capitalize on it! We'll be seeing some of Jon's real renderings in C&D very soon methinks

As a fellow artist (Graphic Artist) I am sad to see this. I'm sure your heart just about hit the floor when you saw/heard the news that Mark Neeper/C&D "stole" your rendering. I truly hope that Mark Neeper suffers professional (negative) consequences because of this. I'm very happy to see that C&D stepped up and acknowledged they were in the wrong (duped).
Keep up the good work Jon, your renderings are amazing and I enjoy your work. Last edited by REVNU; 04-29-2010 at 11:28 AM.. |

the comment on C&D also acknowledges the rip off
"Erik Johnson wrote on Apr 29, 2010 at 10:54 AM Veen - We hire our freelance photographers, writers, and digital artists with the understanding that they're creating original work. It's clear now that wasn't the case with this story."

oh... i guess they apologized...
"Dear Mr. Sibal, I am deeply sorry and embarrassed. I had found or already had various M-Kits that were chopped out or semi-chopped out of their backgrounds, not properly comprehending where they sourced from - even factory photo "kits" of M edition vehicles, which in retrospect, I should have used. I am so embarrassed and hope you will accept my sincere apology for this error. Your work is fantastic, and I hope we can be friends in the future, and thank you for your kind words in the midst of this mishap. Sincerely, Mark Neeper"

First of all, great renderings you do. Jonsibal and Alpine.
I know it sucks when someone is ripping you stuff, but you also forgett something by your self. In most cases you use a original spyphoto for the renderings or sometimes parts of a spyphoto. Also alot of details are from spyphotos. And as one of those spyphotographers that delivers photos to bimmerpost it should be right if the rendering said, based on a photo from CarPix for example. And if you are intrested in some kind of co-operation i could deliver some hi-res photos for you to work on. Cheers Last edited by CarPix; 04-29-2010 at 04:00 PM.. |
