It is possible BMW was able to squeeze more mileage out of this M5 engine since it is newer than the 550i V8.

With the government mandated improved CAFE ratings starting in 2011, BMW needed to improve the combined MPG rating of this new car.

My guess is they were only able to eek out a small improvement in city driving, whereas the big easy gains come from highway, so bam! Easy 24 combined MPG.

That's nothing. In Singapore, this car will be closer to $600k, which is obscene.

Same block, producing over 150hp more.

The mpg will be worse than the 550i. PERIOD.
The block is the only thing that both engines share. The S63Tu is vastly different than the N63.

31 highway might be exaggerated, but keep in mind the N63 only puts out 440 ft/lbs at 1750rpm compared to 500 ft/lbs at 1500rpm for the S63Tu.

Spitting out more power at a lower RPM allows the M5 to maintain the same cruising speed with less engine load. Lower engine load, less fuel used.

Am I still the only one wondering why it's listed with less hp than X5 M? Wasn't it supposed to have more hp than X5 M?

It's got 560hp. What list is that? Weird.

Yep, the "Tu" added Valvetronic, which neither the N63 nor original S63 have. I am not saying that this in and of itself means that the S63Tu, with so much more power than the N63, could somehow be more efficient than it. I personall doubt that, too. But it at least seems plausible that it could.

I suspect soon the the N63 will gain Valvetronic (7 series LCI? 5 series LCI?), and also the original S63 in the X5 M and X6 M will be replaced by the new Tu.

Agreed about 1), that's a typo/error on BMW's part.

2) is correct, the M5 does return a better mileage in the EU cycle than the 550i. The M5 has e.g. Valvetronic and auto start/stop over the 550i. Real world fuel consumption might be a different story though.

Best regards,
south

It looks like the city MPG is better, and the highway MPG is a little worse for the M5 compared to the 550i. With the auto start/stop, that makes sense.

I was just looking at the BMW UK site for the 550i:
18.2 urban / 37.7 extra-urban / 27.2 combined

So EPA 19 city / 24-25 highway / 21-22 combined sounds more realistic.

M5 F10 FTW! This car must be amazing to drive. Or just look at IRL. If I had one I would probably sleep in it as well, every night and day

My bad. I was under impression that 550 4.4 is also valvetronic. If that's the case the difference should be same as between N54 (no valvetronic) and N55 engine (valvetronic)...~2mpg diff.

The N54 and N55 make similar power. The S63Tu and N63 do not. The increase in power by a significant amount - ~150hp - for the S63Tu could easily have offset any efficiency gains that the Valvetronic system provides. That the S63Tu is actually more efficient than the N63 in the EU cycle is actually pretty remarkable. However, as south mentioned, real world mileage may not reflect the same result. I am skeptical that the M5 will be the more efficient vehicle in practice.
