Comparing a 550i of any kind to the M?? I dunno about that.

I had driven both of them on the track at one of the BMW event last year (M3/4/5/6/6GC/X5/6M). I own an M5 currently and I would say it's worth every penny. The X5M is a fast fast SUV but it is a joke at the race track. The gear box was not responsive enough (8 speed auto), the car's centre of gravity is just too high for it to be anywhere near the track.

Don't get me wrong, the X5M is a very capable machine, but I think owning such a car is very contradicting (fast, stiff but not track worthy, not as comfy as a normal x5 variant but cause more to maintain/ more to purchase, not off-road centric but high ride height... Etc). The M5 is very direct in terms of reasoning of own one. It is a very comfortable and well equipped as a daily driver, while you can take it to the track and its ability surpasses a lot of the drivers skill in handling it on any track.

I think it's a no brainer..... Of course the above is biased.

The 550? I owned an x6 50i chipped and modded. Nothing compared to the well balanced package of an M car. Not even 1% close.

When the first F10 M5 came out I drove that and the 550i. It didn't feel that much different so I stuck with the 550 until the CP arrived for the M5. To me the CP felt much more raw and what a M should be.
