M5 or X5M?
Hello,
Please let me introduce myself. I live in the Southwest and currently drive a CLS63 and I am thinking of returning to the BMW family. (I’ve been gone about 10 years, previous BMW’s, 320i, 530I and a couple of 550’s) I typically lease my vehicles for 36 months. I’m deciding between a M5 or a X5M and would appreciate your input to help me process my decision. I’ve driven both and love them! A few random thoughts…Xm5 recently refreshed and M5 to be refreshed soon. Back seat and “trunk” feel small and cramped in XM5 but I rarely have back seat passengers. My wife drives a Navigator so we do have a large SUV and family car when needed. Does anyone know the current residuals and top tier money factor for 36/12k? I’ve read all the threads, thank you in advance for you input. My apologies for double posting in M5 and XM5 forums. Thank you |

Most of us will tell you m5 on here we are somewhat bias. X5m is a good car too but just think about what your going to w it. That may be your deciding factor.

M5 all the way IMO (especially since you live in the south and have SUV in the family already). Although, I am biased too! Not a fan of the X5M. Seems silly to want to turn X5 into something that it isn't. Why not just get an X5 with sports package and dynamic handling if you want an SUV? It is 95 percent of the X5M. Or better yet just go for a new M5, don't think you would ever be sorry.

You will be able to lease the M5 for several 100 below the X5M. Even with similar MSRPs. Something to consider...

Go for the M5 or even M6 if you don't need the extra space. I will go so far as to say that in the current //M lineup, the M5/6 are the only real //M grade cars. There, I said it.

Just making this up trying to justify my BS. Easier to bridge gap between sports car and luxo cruiser sedan versus sports car and SUV. Do people track their X5M? Do they really care how heavy it is? Does it have a higher center of gravity making it inherently less like a sports car? I just guessed that the X5 with said packages is probably closer to M version. And you're probably not going to be driving it that hard on a regular basis to notice anyway. I just consider, perhaps incorrectly, X5M to be more of a novelty versus M5. Also, I have zero facts on this but would guess that far less R&D dollars goes into to X5M development versus that of M5 or M3. If I could only have a single vehicle and valued handling, cargo capacity and higher driving position I might consider X5M but the thought has never crossed my mind before right now. |

If I had to do it again, I'd take the X5M.
Newer chasis, better seats, nicer interior and can actually sit people in the back. With my seats in normal position, hardly anyone can sit behind me. I guess it all depends on your usage. The X5M is the better all around, do it all vehicle. The M5 is showing its age.

I was thinking about X5M or X6M as the replacement of my M6 since I have to return my M6 by the end of summer so I test drove a X6M.... although it's a great car but noway I can drive that car after M6. It's torque monster with no doubt BUT it's too heavy and that 8 speed ZF is not anywhere even close to M DCT. To be honest with you still I have no idea why M division built X5M/X6M with over 5000 lb as M car

I was also debating the M5 and X5M. I really like having an SUV for a DD, it's just so much more functional and feels safer (a false sense of security for the most part I suppose). I ended up purchasing the M5, after a few M3's I was ready for the big boy and it's been a car I've always desired/respected. I also bought an SUV for dd though. Not sure how an M5 makes sense as a weekend car but whatever!

We just had a our second child. When my lease is up in December I will probably replace the M5 with the X5M for the extra room. Agree, great seats. After driving both back to back recently, the M5 is just so much better !!! Then maybe a G Series M5 next.

Replacing my '13 X5M with a '15 M5. The X is more practical and the M is way more fun to drive. The inertia of 5300 lbs robs the performance feel. The M5 always feels like it has too much power: the X5m does not. If I can have only 1 car, I would get the X5M for jack of all trades. If I don't need to compromise, I would get the M5. That said, everyone should try driving an SUV that outperforms BMW's iconic M3 race car at least once just to feel how ludicrous the X5m is

Perhaps drag race more relevant than lap times for fast SUV?
There's no doubt X5 could do with all the power BMW is willing to provide to overcome inertia from rest. Not sure that I would be considering F10 M5 now unless the deal was exceptional. |

Agreed... even faster than C63s with the all new 4 litter TT engine generating over 500 HP

I've had both. Currently in the M5. It's much more fun to drive. If you already have an SUV in the family....then definitely do the M5.

After trading in the 650 xDrive coupe a couple of months ago, I decided to go with a X5M. I still have my M5 and it is phenomenal. However, I must say that I was pleasantly surprised by the X5M. Since the OP is in OK, he will probably have to get a winter wheel pkg regardless of which route he takes but it's hard to beat the M5 for the sheer joy it brings to me on a regular basis. If you are looking to get just one, then I would go with the M5.
