I placed my order and deposit May 23rd and am first to request an M5 at this particular dealer. The salesperson simply said, "we will have a production number closer to the actual production week.". I am beginning to wonder if he had an allocation number at all. What do you guys think.

sounds like BS to me.

I was second in line at my dealer and got a production number with a Week 27 build. Want to get the car by first or second week in sept. We'll see.

It's my understanding that a production number designates that there is an allocation at that dealership, and that number should be coupled with a production week. So if your dealership has an allocation they should also have a production number and week.

I need a little help from the guys that really get this stuff. I've ordered about 20 new BMW's and never worried much about my Production Number. I went by my dealer an hour ago and he basically my guys said GREAT NEWS, your car is scheduled to build week 31 so it should be here in early September.

I then asked rfor the production number, and he said it hasn't been assigned yet. So I say, well then it's not a real order. And he says it sure is, and pulls out the typicall dealer factory computer report showing all their order and my M5 is listes with a preduction date of week 31.

So, what the real story? Anybody know for sure.

I am no expert but I didn't have a production number until several days after my dealer entered the order. I think once BMW AG acknowledges the order (111) the prod number is assigned.

Yeah, it just seems a bit weird that they'd assign a production date without a production number. My dealer assures me it's real. Was wondering if anyone else had the date before the number.

Something doesn't seem right. Also I doubt a week 31 production date will get you the car in eat sept.

I hear ya. What's really crazy is that I have a very special relationship with this dealer. Not only have I bought 20 cars from them, but my company also manages they're entire Network and Voice infastructure across all 13 of their dealerships. To top it all off, I've know my sales guy persoally for 34 years.

Anyway, I'll never get why dealers think they're smarter that the rest of us. It is what it is. And I thought Ferrari was tough to figure out.

Sorry man, hopefully the car is yours as they promised.

I can tell you my experience...I got a text from my dealer on a Friday afternoon, telling me he just got an allocation. I went in Saturday and spec'ed my car. He printed out a sheet confirming my order, and on this sheet there was a production number. I couldn't tell online what my build week was, so I went in to my dealer and he looked it up on his computer and told me it was scheduled for week 28, the second week of July. They said their experience was that they would receive cars, in general, 4 weeks from the build week. Hopefully this holds true and the car will be here mid-August. Your dealer might not be so far off if you are build week 31, which is first week of August, that you may get the car early September. Good luck mate!

Although I am doing ED my dealer told me it only takes one week, maybe two, to build the car.

I checked with the sales manager and he said that I do not have a production number even though I submitted my order over a month ago. Will dealers be receiving more allocations in July/Aug?

Guys- here's a cut and paste of my post in the United States ordering thread:

I just spoke with my salesman to see if I could get some answers given this thread - here's what I learned. First, for US delivery, racer10's situation is correct. BMW allocated the first month or so of production to the dealerships based on their sales volume. Bigger dealers got more, smaller dealers got fewer or none. If a dealer received an allocation out of this frist batch, each production slot they were allocated already had a prodiuction number associated with it. However, dealers can enter orders into the system in excess of any allocation they received and they will show in the system as a valid order - albeit an order that has not yet been assigned a production slot!. So, if the dealer cannot give you a production number then you DO NOT have a production slot in the first batch. Your order is sitting there for BMW to do the second round of allocations.

The process is different for ED since the cars come out of the ED pool. Your dealer submits an order request to the Special Sales Department at BMW NA. Part of the order form is the selection of three desired delivery dates. Once received and processed by the Special Sales Department, they will reply with an email to your dealer (I was cc'd on this email as well) with a production number and your delivery date. It usually takes a few business days to get this confirmation email of your ED order.

This is the understanding of my salesman, who's been a BMW CA for 24 years so I have a reasonably high degree of confidence in this information. I hope it helps clear things up a bit.

I'm totally convinced that this is accurate. I've decided to stop thinking about it. It will get here when it gets here.
