Modifying the standard exhaust ?
Hello Chaps,
I was studying a photo of the internals of the standard exhaust system, in the exhaust thread, and i was wondering, if anyone thought it possible, to modify the F10 M5 silencers, the same way that the E92 M3 exhaust was modded ?. If you cut open the rear silencers, then removed the packing around the baffles, then covered the holes in the pipes, it will effectively become a straight through silencer ?. Just a thought, as the E92 exhaust mod, worked very well, regards, SIMON. |

Not sure you'd gain much as there's pretty much nothing in the stock mufflers .
But if you're happy to donate your mufflers to research give it a try

I did it myself on my E92 and am willing to give it a shot on a donor M5 exhaust, I honestly loved the sound on my M3.
Regarding there not being much in the stock mufflers, the Eisenmann is just cans and is much louder, wouldn't that mean there has to be something inside the stock mufflers to quiet the exhaust down? I'm truly a novice with this stuff, any help would be appreciated.

I'm guessing under the sound deadening material is the split to 2 pipes and they are perforated. Any ideas?

I'm really liking the idea of modifying the stock exhaust. I like the concept of inserting a "Y" junction into the stock muffler. Does anyone have a pic of the stock mufflers opened with that mesh material removed? Any of the tuners willing to give it a try?

I believe the competition exhaust is without the bafflers. Its almost too much work if ur paying someone to do it. Deoends what sound u r looking for. Just get a muffler delete.

I removed all of the sound deadening material and found that each muffler had around 2 pints of water in, maybe even more. Had to drill a small drain hole and then close it up with a tiny tig weld.
The sound is good, has a lot more rasp and crackle. No drone inside the car and volume I would say is about 15-20% louder outside the car. Can't test it under load yet as it's been raining all day but will post a video soon.... Last edited by dapple; 04-27-2014 at 01:08 PM.. |

Brave work, thanks! It does sound more dynamic without that little bit of packing. If the muffler position leads to water accumulation maybe the small drain hole would be something to leave in place? Motorcycles have that small drain hole in the low spot in the exhaust to get rid of the water. Doubt it has any negative effect, and lets the water escape.
