How LOW did you go (fuel)?
How low did you guys go in fuel left in the car?
How much fuel did you pump back into the car? The other day, I had about 10 miles left and after a short drive it dropped down to --- all of a sudden. I was able to pump 20.x gallons of fuel back into the car.

I ran out of gas, embarrassing I know. Had 40 miles left and so forgot to look down at gas gage while doing some spirited driving. It is shocking how much gas you burn up in this driving mode, had done well under 20 miles before the engine cut off. The tow truck driver showed by with exactly one gallon of gas. Car of course would not start, had the guy tow me to the nearest gas station. Lesson learnt, always tell the tow guy to bring 5 gallons of fuel.

I don't think anyone can do much but tie with you for how low they can go short of generating a vacuum in tank for a negative reading. |

Don't all cars have in reserve, i.e. after the "gas empty" light goes on, at least, I am told, a gallon of gas or enough to go for another 20 miles?

I can't speak for the 2013 F10 M5 yet.. but being a 2010 E60 M5 driver that has literally had the car shut down at 60mph down the street from a gas station, and then rolled into one (don't forget about no power steering if this happens to you), I might be able to contribute some info:
With my E60 M5, I brought it down to "---" two days ago and filled up right after I got that "---" readout. I filled it up, and the pump read out "17.2". The fuel tank capacity for the E60 is 18.5 gallons. So I had 1.3 gallons to spare.. equals about 12mpg. I once drove (a year or so ago) with "---" for 10 miles and then filled up at a gas station. So.. it would maybe be a fair estimate to say that once you read "---" on the F10 M5's dash (estimated 20mpg), you have about 20 miles left? |
