What would you do in this situation?

Hi guys. Need to poll the group here. The other day I went to my usual Starbucks and noticed they had just layed asphalt on the parking lot of a Vet hospital they built next-door. The access road to Starbucks was open with no unusual signage. When I returned home I noticed the entire front end of my car is coated with black specs. The alpine white had been transformed into Vanilla Bean. I washed the car and then followed it with tar remover. Did nothing. The spots are large enough you can feel them.

I am guessing this will require professional detail/buff/polish etc to remove? Several hundred dollars?

Do I just suck it up or complain? Really pisses me off. The joys of white car ownership...

Thoughts?

Get a professional to take care of it. Sounds like it's likely on the surface, therefore shouldn't be to difficult to correct.

Before you go to a pro. Buy a clay bar kit and give it a shot. I believe mothers sells one. It takes off most paint contaminants. I'm sure it'll take that stuff right off.

Regarding your question on whether or not you 'complain'.....

I understand why you would want to. I really do. It's the principal. But for me my time is way more valuable. For the amount of time and energy it would take to complain, I could make enough to pay for the repair several times over. And I would hope anyone driving an M5 would be in a similar situation.

It's not like the complaint will be easy... First...who do you complain to?...then, that person/organization will surely deflect. And here is where the work really starts.

It's just not worth the time. Cars that get driven ARE going to get 'battle scars'. It's inevitable.

Best of luck bud.

Agree 100%. I think I'm just annoyed and want to take it out on the perps.

I will likely end up having my opti guard guy just deal with it. Btw this shit sticks to optiguard like glue!!!!

I had used tar removal spray few years back. It was for $4-5. Give it a shot. Any parts store should be carrying it.

Honestly if you complained i'm sure they would probably just tell you to take a hike. I probably would too. Get it detailed, i'm sure it will clean up nicely.

I had a similar situation, tar spots all down one side, assuming your still friends with the dealer you bought it off, ring him/her up give them some warning, then drop in, talk sh*t, sit in the new M3 etc etc, while a groomer guy takes out the back, 10 minutes later fixed for free! (at least should be if the dealer has any brains, second assumption)

Worked for me!

Cheers

I don't think this is Starbucks fault. These specs probably didn't come from the Starbucks lot, but likely from the tires of cars on the road that may have just come out of the resurfaced lot.

The takeaway is avoid road construction areas in general.

If you have a clearbra this should be easy to remove.

Clay bar is how you clean up paint that is already clean but feels rough/girt texture. (not large contaminates, tar etc) only small contaminants.

Tar remover all the way then a good wax to replace what you have stripped off.

Make sure you rotate your cloth/use lots of cloths when removing tar remover as not to grind in any grit you already removed into your clear coat.

Tried my clay bar and tar remover. Doesn't touch it. The spots have to be chipped off. That's how big they are. Once off the tar remover gets the excess. Very tedious. There is no way I have the patience to DIY.

The point I was trying to make. Clay bar can make a mess of your situation. I have used the edge of a credit card to "pop" baked on tar off. Just have to be careful. Finish with good tar remover. Always test your chosen tar remover on the paint in a location that isn't visible to ensure comparability. (top of inlet to inter-cooler is a good location)
