does your F10 M5 whine?

I have a 2012 M5 and I have noticed that recently it has been a bit 'whiney' sort of like a supercharger noise. I wasn't concerned until a friend that has never been in the car before mentioned it, now I think its getting louder, but that may just be me noticing it and listening for it after someone pointed it out.

seems to notice it more when engine is colder and during slower driving.

Yes - only when cold. When warm, silent. Search fir this and it has been mentioned many times. You are not alone.

The one M5 I've logged considerable miles on definitely has a noticeable whine, especially when it's cold and during low cruising speed. So need not worry, you are not alone.

Count me in - late production 2013 - whine/groaning when cold - seems to go away once a little warmer. I've put the window down and it doesn't seem to be as loud outside the car(?)

Hey...maybe it's something the put into ActiveSound to mess w us...

it happens when you turn your steering wheel right? it happened to me on my 2013 m5, its normal.
my 2014 hasn't started yet, but i wont be surprised if it does... who cares.
anyone who asks about it, explain that this isnt a $30K Toyota, it has high performance components, sometimes u give up conventional "assumptions" of what a car behaves like to be better, faster, stronger.

I think its the active sound as well because I tested it out. It happens only when you floor it.

In my case, definitely not active sound as the whine is louder with the windows open.

Mine does only in extreme cold temps - not doing it anymore. Also, I could swear it only happened in efficient mode, but that could be my imagination.

they all do it. some might not have heard it but every single M5 and M6 I've seen (over 10) does it.

typically goes away when car is warm.

Mine with CP exhaust did the same. No whine with the M Perf exhaust (either it gone, ECU still confused, or the exhaust sound is completely masking it).

Mine didn't or I hadn't noticed it much, but went into dealers yesterday for new pads as they squeal like a pig, and since a very noticeable supercharger like whine when cold. I have only driven short distances moderately, so can't comment on when hot. I did have an additional 30 miles on my clock, so I am beginning to suspect a mechanic has ragged the balls off it, or I may be paranoid.........squeeling brakes have gone though, followed the break in procedure as recommended on here, thanks

I babied mine from new and the whine was really bad. It improved after I started driving a little harder and was almost eliminated after break-in service. Our turbo charged petrol MB whines much worse than the M5 (both with cold engines only).

30 mile road test seems a bit excessive, but the car is built for hard driving (not suggesting that they did, just that it can safely take some abuse). These cars do adapt to driving styles slightly, so may just take some time to re-learn yours. If you are really worried check the condition of the tyres - especially the rears. Next time you have some work done ask that the car is not road tested (obviously they will need to for brake changes, but should keep it to a minimum).

Mine does it as well. I thought it was low on steering fluid. But idk maybe it's just the car.

Well after two weeks in the garage I used the M5 thursday and NO Wining at all, even with the windows open, I do use reverse to get out of the garage though, this could have a bearing if it's the gearbox , not sure but I always reverse first thing.
PS) I did the Hard brake -in which could have an effect.
