Odd speed limit display issue

I did a crazy 750 mile road trip from Boston to New Brunswick, Canada and back today. In the rural areas of northern Maine on I-95, the speed limit is 75 mph (a rare and wonderful thing here in the northeast). The HUD speed limit display properly read and displayed 75 mph as I passed each speed limit sign. However, after 4 - 5 miles, the display kept switching back to 65 mph. Has anyone experienced the display changing like this without passing a speed limit sign?

On a related note, when I crossed into Canada, the system read the Canadian 100 km/hr signs and displayed them (properly) as 60 mph. That was very cool I thought.

Not that issue, but something similar. On the freeway to the F1 track in Austin the speed limit is 80 & 85 and the HUD does'nt always recognize it, just displays 70.

The system uses a combination of visual data from the signs and data stored in the navigation system's database. There's a routine in the software that displays the database's value if the car hasn't "read" a sign for a predetermined period of time, plus virtual 'markers' on roads in the database that trigger SLI display updates. That way you're not staring at "---" for extended periods of time.

It's possible that the speed limit was increased but the 2013 map data doesn't have the newer 75 MPH limit.

Same with the speed limit in Austin. I know it was recently raised in Texas. And here's why: the system uses stored image recognition to display SLI data. It doesn't read the numbers. It matches entire signs against the database. 80 and 85 MPH signs don't exist in the database - yet - because they're relatively new to USA/NA. So when it passes one, it ignores it - there's no match. The 2014 navigation update should resolve this.

wdimagineer, great explanation! It makes perfect sense. I'm going to guess that BMW was also smart enough to cross-reference km/h speed limit sign images and mph speed limit sign images. That would explain why the Canadian 100 km/h signs were imaged as 60 mph rather than the slightly more accurate 62 mph.

I have a bigger problem, I haven't been able to get this sign to show up in my HUD since leaving my M5 in Germany in October and picking up in December:

Can any one help me get it to show up in my HUD?
Was there a software update that broke it?

In the US, it's part of the Driver's Assistance Package and shows up automatically. I took a look and couldn't find it listed on the bmw.ca site. Maybe it's not available there? Odd.

lol. I think the closest we can find that here in North America is Bokke's new highway in (the Republic of) Texas.

It was raised in 2011. What it doesn't seem to get correct is the speed limit on the toll roads of which 130 is one. It gets the 75 correct on I-35 but not on 45 or 130. I drive them all the time since I live here in Austin. I love the 90mph tollways (the cops give you 10-15 here in Texas. I was blasting 87 and passed a DPS guy on the 75mph 45 toll road just this afternoon. Course he couldn't get around to get me either since the highway is heavily divided and limited access....LOLOL
