DIY Oil Change?
Hi Guys,
I've been looking for a DIY for our M5s but I can't locate one. Has anyone done their own mid-interval oil change? And if so, are there any particular steps/differences I need to be aware of? I've changed the oil on all my previous cars, but never an M engine. Thanks guys, Haysam |

I have been asking them the same question. I have been changing the oil/filter on my cars for many years including my previous E60 M5. I guess I will take photos when I do the oil change on my M in the next few months.

Only at the BMW service intervals of 7500 miles. I like to do one in between these intervals.

DIY LOF Change
I guess that no one has done this or that they just did not document the procedure. I will be a guinea pig.

I've purchased the filter and oil, I'm about 3k away from doing my mid cycle change. I now know that the filter kit is the same as the one for the X5M/X6M, which have a drain plug in the filter housing. Our M5 don't so we only have to remove one drain plug, remove and replace filter then fill to max. It should be a very simple procedure, I plan to post a DIY after I do the change.

Ha! Just to be obtuse...I've sucked (evac'd) the oil out of my previous cars...not sure how I'm gonna do that w/this one though. Kinda waiting for someone else to post the DIY too.

DIY Oil Change
Me too! On my previous M5s I've used a vacuum pump through the dipstick tube. On each car the pickup tube went to the low point of the oil pan and removed all but the last couple of drops of oil. With the oil filter mounted on the inner fender an oil change was a 15 minute (and clean) job. I'm waiting for someone to find a way to do the same on the F10.
I've spoken to a couple of BMW techs and they say draining the oil from the drain plug isn't a problem (especially if you have a lift) but removing the oil filter is kind of messy because it was relocated to under the engine, reached from below. The E60 M5 had a drain plug on the filter cover, the F10 covers don't (or didn't-see below). One tech said after draining the oil pan he slightly loosens the oil filter and lets the oil drip off the housing for 10 or 15 minutes and then carefully unscrews the filter cover. He said it will still drip oil on the structural reinforcement panel (the metal panel under the engine) but not as much as trying to unscrew and remove the filter when you've drained the oil pan. There may be an improvement for this last (oil filter removal) problem. The part number for the oil filter cover has been changed and the old part number supersedes to the new part number, which means they should be interchangeable. I've ordered a new one, I hope it has a drain plug! I'll be picking it up Monday. |

Follow-up on oil filter cover part number change

So has anyone documented their experience yet? I just got my M5 last week, and will most definitely change the oil and filter at 500 miles, then take my oil (Mobil 1 0-40 European Formula) to the dealer and have them do the 1200 mile. I'll then do mine in between the dealer scheduled ones thereafter. Now I'm not being mean, BUT I both get a kick out of and get perturbed by the lack of DIY posts in this area on this forum. I own a Harley Davidson Street Glide and a Denali HD Duramax, and those forums can overwhelm a person with "how tos" and DIY threads/posts... Please don't post that "maintenance is included for 4 years/50k miles". Clearly, posts like that demonstrate a lack of understanding. I suppose I'm one of the few rednecks driving an M5... Just sayin...

Welcome.
I personally think that an oil/filter change at 500 miles when you'll be getting one at 1200 miles is overkill; YMMV. Also, at the 1200 mile service I think you'd be better off letting the dealership place the OEM M5 oil in the car; in fact they may refuse to use your Mobil 1. Regardless you could then do your own oil/filter change at 5K miles. Take care, Bish |
