One thing I noticed today about S3. You have to be damn careful flooring it in first gear because it hits redline before you are ready. I have been careful the other times I have done this but today I got only slightly distracted and the M-display flashed red at me and the car shifted for me even though it was in manual mode............

Felt like a dumbass.

That's why i have all set to D3 on M2. Works great on mustang demos. Car revs too fast to redline.

I have driven both and DCT has its good points but for me (and not to disparage DCT owners) it's just plain BORRRRRRRRRRRRRRRINGGGGG!

DCT is the only true manual. You shift it with your hands. The 6 speeder has to have feet and hands to make it operate right. What a mess. Plus very difficult to eat French fries and text while driving.

Nah purist wouldn't want a turbo because it has lag.

Purists should buy a 320i.

i agree man. i actually miss the smg. because of the brutal nature of the gear changes, it just seemed more ///M like.

even though i know the dct is quicker, more efficient, blah blah blah. but not of that stuff equates to fun.

i don't know why everyone's gone crazy over the dct here, what are you all like 80 or something? lol.

I have to agree with you guys. Last year in deciding whether to get DCT or manual to finalize my M5 order, I almost got the DCT but am glad I chose the manual 6-speed. Having driven the DCT M5 during the 2-day course at the M Performance school, it is the way to go if one's primary intention is to track the car (although one of the instructors at the M Performance school driving the manual M5 beat the others in their DCTs, I guess also racing experience counts not just the car), however, since I have no intentions of racing with others(maybe just test it out on the tracks to get time) and since I am not 65 or more in age, I decided that driving a manual is much more engaging and fun! Anyway, if I were aged 65 or over, I may have chosen an MB instead, he he.

What I don't understand is why so many DCT owners bash the 6 speed? Like they are on a mission to tell everyone that DCT is better, this is the future, you six speeders should get over yourselves an move on. As if to convince BMW, not to improve in the shifter but to give up and never offer it going forward. What's up with that? C'mon Everyone deep down knows driving a manual transmission is fun regardless of the car or truck it is in.

I don't think EVERYONE agrees on anything. Nor should they. I'll drive MTs until I no longer can, but I have a huge respect for the DCT M5 (and I've driven both).

I too get tired of the "my choice is smarter than your choice" conversations, but it's more like arguing that black is a better color than white. Everyone has their own preferences. None is right or wrong for everyone.

Completely agree. There is no better. I'd love to have one of each if I had cash to burn.

All manufacturers are going away from manuals. Buy them while you can. It's your car buy what you want while you have a choice.

Every car I have owned that was not an SUV, except one 335d, was a 6 MT or 5MT. My DCT M3 coupe is my first DCT car and I went DCT after doing a track event in an M6 DCT. That car completely sold me on the DCT and I do not miss the 6 MT at all. Do not get me wrong I love 6 MT cars, but the M3, M5 and M6 all work best with the DCT. I have come to feel that the 6 MT works best on small cars like the Fiat or 1M coupe. The bigger cars work better with the DCT in my opinion.

I love my 6MT in this car. I is very very responsive and does exactly what I want it to do when I choose to make it to whatever I want..

It's a fantastic choice as a 6MT, they did a great job with the throttle blip, if you love manuals there is absolutely nothing wrong with it, extremely fun to drive all the time

It's the last time the m5 will come like this, in a number of years it will be rather special and rare too, I am sure.

Go for it in 6MT. I am very happy with mine.

You won't miss the 6 speed, DCT is awesome
