Break-In Service Questions

What is exactly included in the break-in service? I called my service advisor and asked for an appt for the break-in service. He had NO idea what I was talking about. It took about 5minutes of nearly begging him to just give me an appt. Finally he said just drop it off next Friday and they'd get in taken care of. Unfortunately this is the only BMW dealer within 5hrs. Sales is great - love the guys - but service is pretty ridiculous.

So I'd like a list to be able to verify that they have done everything. Thanks for any help!

I had my F10 M5's 1200 mile service performed in BMW Niederlassung Munich while on ED, reportedly one of the best and most knowledgable service shops in Germany. They changed the oil, no gear box, no differential service. Some postings you'll find in this forum states they had gear box/diff services as well ...

I got mine done while on ED as well. By definition, they should have changed your differential oil and well as engine oil.

Break in check service

The 1,200 mile service on the F10 M5 is:

Change engine oil and filter
Change differential oil
Change transmission oil (6 spd manual only - no service to DCT)

The attached .pdf is straight from the BMW TIS. If anything else was/wasn't done then they didn't do it right.

I did ED and made 2000+ miles but did not have any break-in service thinking of having it done when the car gets to the U.S. I am having the car redelivered to the Performance Center in South Carolina. Should I schedule a break-in service for the car or is this automatically done when it gets to the PC since the car would clearly indicate that no break-in service has been performed yet?

It should be:

- Engine oil
- Differential oil
- Gearbox oil ONLY if 6MT; DCT is "lifetime"
- Disable "break-in mode", which for the first time on the M5 is a special ECU mode.

For engine oil, make sure they don't use the 10W-60 oil that almost all other M cars have always used. Since it sounds like this dealership doesn't know what they're talking about, you should stress this. The X5M, X6M, 1M, and now the M5 all use I believe 0W-30. Verify that exact viscosity in your owner's manual and make absolutely certain that you don't get a tech who says, "It's an M car, so it must use 10W-60."

Excellent, thanks for providing the TIS! I've had my concerns and planned to have my local dealership review the records. This helps!

In the US BMW service will probably use 5W30, which is acceptable.

I've done business with BMW Niederlassung in the past and you're right, the service is top-notch. But then again, it should be -- it is owned by BMW AG!

Before the Welt that's where ED cars were delivered.
